Default Max lift w/ stock heads?

Does anyone know what a safe max lift is for the LS1 w/ stock heads? Also, will I have any problems if I switch to a set of unshaved truck heads later on? I would like to order my cam direct from Comp, and this would be good info to have. I've already spoken with a cam tech at Comp, and he was doing well to use complete sentences.

good points guys I'm looking at 222/226 duration on a 112 LSA. I'm wanting to try out ~.580" lift if possible. I'll do some more checking and see what I come up with.

Trevor, are you saying that you are not going to upgrade your springs at the same time?

Carlitos... have you dynoed yet? I'm assuming you went with XE-R lobes. I received my 224/228 on a 112 LSA today. I'm going to be running on stock heads with 918s. I'm curious to know what kind of power you are making.

DB you are correct on the cam specs but I have ARE Stage II heads milled 0.030

People are running the C1 cam w/ stock heads 222/222 .566/.566 112 lsa with no problems and also the TR 224 cam.

My new cam will be here next month. MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! It will bw an XE-R grind as well

The search feature is a great thing. Here is what Chris B posted a while back:

quote:
FWIW our Pig cam - 226/226 .591/.591 112 clayed at 0.102 on the intake and 0.094 on the exhaust with GTP stage II 5.3 heads (2.02/1.57) - that was on a 110 IC. I would keep a minimum of 80 thou clearance.

I spoke w/ Comp again, and this guy wasn't anymore help than the first one. He told me that for a custom grind, I'd have to pay $500 for a master and then $395.78 for the cam itself. A $900 cam...what a bargain. He tried to get me to buy a 224/228 w/ ~.530" lift. I passed on that one.
Eric - Nono, when I say stock heads I'm referring to no porting. The springs will be replaced with 918's. I'd be surprised if the stock springs made it long enough for the car to fire and idle.
Ryan - I'm sending you mail now. I thought that the truck heads had the same pushrod length w/ a smaller combustion chamber, but I wanted to make sure.
Carlitos - Thanks for the info. That's very good to know.

You could get 3.62" of clearance if you hit max lift at BDC.

Otherwise it depends on the cam duration, profile, etc. You really don't have problems at max lift - it's at the intermediate lifts when the piston is near TDC that make the biggest differencde.

agreed. stay withing the 560 range and you'd be fine unless you ran some duration like I'd like to. as far as the heads, i assume that you'd be running stock deck 5.3 heads so compression would be 10.8-11 or so, but i thought that pushrod length was unchanged...just the chamber was smaller. dont forget that if you stick 2.02/1.57's in that the chamber will be opened up a bit to clear the valves and then you may need to mill some to keep it up around 11:1.

hope that made sense.

Ryan
