Default Clearancing Rockers For Large Springs - Revisited

Well, I've been wondering about this ever since jmx posted the pictures showing the modifications, so tonight I pulled off the passenger side valve cover and here's what I found:

Springs
Rockers

I didn't have much doubt you all were right. I sure wish Agostino would have mentioned something about this step since he's done hundred's of heads!!

Anyway, there's 1,100 miles on those heads. The three pushrods I checked so far are perfect. There isn't ever a scratch on the rockers. Any comments or opinions on my situation here? Thanks.

I am not up on the situation so maybe you can recap for me.

What springs are those? Do you know the diameter? Also, What is the diameter on those retainers?

One last thing, how close are those springs to the head on the exhaust side? They look like they touch or come very close.

I can tell you all you need to know.. I have been thru this big time. Pull the rocker arms off and clearance a minimum of 50 thousandths on the underside. To be on the safe side you might want to send your heads off to have them inspected. Unless you can do this yourself. Something as simple as clearancing the rocker arms have cost me a lot of money.

According to Barry at ARE, they are K-Motion K-800's. He said they were having problems with another brand, so they switched to them. The diameter of the springs and retainers is 1.4375.

Did you have marks on your retainers? If so you need to clearance the rocker arms with a dremmel or something.. Takes a good 30 minutes..

What size cam are you running? When did you purchase youe setup? Was it beofre they changed to the newer springs?

Just curious cuz I have a similar combo with a 226/234 .552/.575 112 cam. I am low on power and was wondering about this but we clearenced them and they were a tight 15-18 thousandths.

What were some of the other symptoms?

Eric - I'm not sure if I know what you mean, but from the inside flange of the valve cover seal to the retainers is .5625.

Vince - Yes, there are marks on them. You can see them very easily in the pictures.

FL8PONY - I'm running a 218/224 528/535 114 LSA cam. I had no symptoms, it was running great. I just happened to see a post saying the rockers needed to be clearanced.

I clicked on the pics and it did not show up.. I would clearance them b4 putting everything back together.. You could be missing some power. I would still recommend having the heads inspected..

Eric, I believe the spring clearance is fine. I emailed you a picture taken from a different angle. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Good thing you checked it. I have no idea what your pictures are of, but I can probably guess.

Hope my pic of the clearanced rockers helps you out a bit.

Thanks jmx, your pics will be really helpful !! If you right click on my links, you can save the picture. Better than nothing I guess. I sent the pics and a note to Nick at ARE this morning, asking him why he didn't provide this information. He said every stage 2 head package receives a "detailed rocker clearance modification instruction", and mine must have gotten lost from my package. I had him fax it to me this afternoon <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
