3.42 gears in a 2002 TA (A4) from the factory!!! check this out!!
Well my brother is looking at buying a 2002 sunset orange TA today in San Angelo, Tx. So i decided to look at a dealership up here in Lubbock and they just received a new Sunset Orange TA (A4).. well i wanted to make sure that he got the performance axle (3.23) gears. Well the salesman said he had his mechanic go out to the car and see what gears it has. Well he was told that the car has 3.42!!! but the door sill reads GU2!!! well on my car i have the GU5 or 3.23's.... They dont make any auto's from the factory with 3.42 do they!!?? i did not think they do but he said he would let anyone i wanted check it out and make sure... GU2 is 2.73's right?? just wanted to check... Jason and Joseph told me that they are 2.73's in the car... and the sticker does not have performance axle on it...

Sounds like they're trying to blow smoke up your booty.

Yeah I'd take it out and check out the rpms relative to the speed and figure it out. That or make 'em remove the cover and start counting teeth

FWIW:
Might try this:
You could put the car on a lift and turn the drive shaft and see how many turns it takes to rotate the tires ove revolution. This will not be exact but you should be able to tell 2.73's from 3.23's or 3.42's
I think it would pretty hard to tel 3.23's from 3.42's.
or
Put the car in drive (not overdrive) and see how many rpm it turns at 60mph. Test drive a v6 car and put it in drive (not overdrive) and see how many rpm it turns at 60mph. You could test both in overdrive but I think it would be easier to make tell in drive.
However, I'd be shocked if the car actually had 3.42's and I sure want to know the story of how it got them. It's probably just GU2 2.73, instead of a GU5 3.23, the whole board will be surprised if it's a GU6 3.42, but with production winding down and GM wanting to use up all the parts in the supply line, you never know...

Tommy,
It's just another case of an ignorant salesman. Tell him to get in the car and see what the tach reads at 70 MPH in OD. I bet it's right around 1,900-2,000 RPM, which is 2.73's! If the factory made the mistake it would have to be changed out because your speedo and shift points would be off from the different gears.

There are no LS1s with A4 and 3.42 gears from the factory, although V6 cars can come this way.
What would make this mechanic think it had 3.42s if the sticker reads GU2? GU2 definitely equals 2.73s.
