Default I want my LS1 Z28 to sound like a Ferarri, not a Monster Truck

I know I'm gonna get ragged on for this post, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as all these guys dying to make their F-body sound like a Mustang.

I like the sound of loud LS1's, Stangs, and lots of other cars.
Especially old carbureted hot rods.

But...

I like the way my Z28 sounds with the stock exhaust... but I could deal with a bit more personality.

I would like to know if there are any options out there to NOT make my car sound like a Mustang , or an Alcohol Funny car ... but like a Ferrari .

We all know the sound.
I don't mean exactly like it, I just mean WAY MORE in that direction than the Exhaust Cut Out Sound.

Drastically different mufflers? resonators? pipes?

Any advice would be appreciated

An X pipe is a big factor. An X pipe will significantly raise the frequency of the exhaust sound. Next, you'll need to turn a bunch of rpms. Ferraris turn a lot of rpms. Tim Cresswell in Baton Rouge probably has the closest thing to a Ferrari sound in his '98 TA. It sounds exotic. Very mean. Nothing like a normal LS1. Check with him.

It is much higher pitched than any other LS1's without an xpipe, but at idle it sounds like a beast. I haven't met anyone that didn't love the way my car sounded in the top rpm ranges!!

Where can I get an X pipe?
Are there ones made especially for Camaros?
It kind of sounds like a big job that requires, headers, and all kinds of true duel conversion type stuff.
And sounds expensive too.

What all needs to be done to install an x pipe?
Can you even get some what close that kind of sound with one muffler?
And what kind costs would I be looking at?
Would my entire stock exhaust have to be replaced from the Block to the tail pipes?

It kind of sounds like a big job that requires, headers, and all kinds of true duel conversion type stuff. Yes Mr Ferrari, you are correct!
And sounds expensive too. And you want a Ferrari sound on a dump truck budget?

What all needs to be done to install an x pipe? Tie the headers quickly into an X pipe. Next, go into a tuning chamber (critical). Next take the duals out the back or side, with the correct resonators (also critical).
Can you even get some what close that kind of sound with one muffler? If it were that easy, everyone would have one!
And what kind costs would I be looking at? You know what Ferrari owners say...If you have to ask...
Would my entire stock exhaust have to be replaced from the Block to the tail pipes? Oh yeah!

I have the same engine as this car:

http://www.corsaperf.com/flashc5.htm

Is it really that hard to get mine to sound close to that?

I've heard lots of dyno runs on LS1s and that C5 was either pulling well over 7000 rpms or the sound file was manipulated (sped up). Very high rpm is half the battle in sounding like a Ferrari. Ever heard a Ferrari at 4000 rpms?...Yuck. 8000 rpms? YESSSS!

I know I'm going to get killed for this one....

I run JBA headers to the stock exhaust with a Flow Master chamber at the back. It is a lot more high pitch than other LS1's out there. It doesn't sound like a typical muscle car.

I second the RPM thing though. The car sounds kick-*** in the upper RPM range, but sounds like a kazoo on crack (as someone so kindly put it) on the lower RPM.

I have had many compliments on the way the car sounds. Unfortunately my setup chokes the exhaust flow horribly.

You might want to consider a B&B catback as well. Although not loud, it is a bit louder than stock and noticeably deeper/smoother sounding. Seems to have a touch of that exotic sound (at least I think so anyway).

The B&B Triflow has a somewhat exotic sound to it(nothing like a cutout or LM). It looks sweet too.

B&B - exspensive, can be hard to put on(unless you own a sawzall <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> ) but, sounds awesome with a set of longtubes w/cats. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Being from Italy I have been around many Ferrari's and driven several models(F348's, F355's,etc..) They do not sound like a V8 at all. More like a tuned weed wacker.

Go buy stock Z06 Ti mufflers, get an Xpipe, long tubes, remove the cats, and go rollin'... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

De-stroke your engine and run it out to 8000rpm?

Ever heard a C5R? It's got a large LS1-based engine (it's a 427 typically I believe, 7.4L) and sounds crazy. Something like 650hp?

Anyway check out the sound:

http://fear.net/~dope/nin/lgmotorsports2.wmv
http://fear.net/~dope/nin/lg_fsvt2001.mpg

Figure 20-25k for a complete engine and associated hardware. You'd be good to go for 1/10th the cost of a ferrari (and LOTS faster!)

So theres no Cat back system that will get me even close to sounding the way that C5 Vette with the Corsa exhaust in this video does?

http://www.corsaperf.com/flashc5.htm

Or a semi-affordable mod like a resonator, or bullet, or cross pipe along with a cat back?

Somthing to just make it sound more throaty, and high pitched than the borla types do.

I guess I just want my camaro to be a bit louder than stock, but still sound classy.

Like people already said, buy a B&B. its the closest thing without going with an Xpipe.
