Default New cam in...... Thanks to Judson and the guys at SAM...

Over the last few weeks the guys at SAM have been in the process of doing a little more work on my heads and Judson recomended a cam change. So out with the 238/241 615/605 and in with the 252/258 650/650...

I got everything back togeather and then fought a ignition bug for a few days. Guys..... BE SURE THE GROUND WIRES ON THE BACK OF THE DRIVERS SIDE HEAD ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AND TIGHT. Mine were on but not tight. These ground points are for all that is important with the PCM, coils, O2 heaters and a bunch of other stuff.

After getting everything like it needed to be I hooked up the Autotap and down the road I went. After driving for 30 miles I got me a cold drink, let the engine cool and pulled out on my favorite taxpayer owned testtrack. I went from a slight roll with the shiftlight set at 7000, hit the spacebar on the computer and away I went.
Before I was ready the little light was on and I missed that shift point by 200 rpm but the engine felt like it wanted to turn more. I ignored the light on the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts and shifted when it felt about right. Without a reliable tach I had to read the Autotap log to see what the engine liked.
2-3 shift 7937, 3-4 shift7900 and 7500 in 4th before letting off.

All I can say is at fifty years of age a six speed with a 7900 rpm engine is better than sex.

Judson it worked just like you said it would!!!
I guess it's my time to buy at the diner.

Holy **** you turned that thing up. Last time I heard a V8 shift that high was an old 350 my dad built with a solid lift cam. He'd shift around 8000-8500 in that.
How did it sound wound up that tight?? Id love to hear a sound clip.

I'll get on a dyno if I'm near one but track testing means more to me.

Congrats Joe. I saw your flow sheets at SAM and all I can say is OMG! You've got the highest flowing LS1 heads I've ever seen. Matched with that "manly" cam, you should be flying in your heavyweight 'bird. Kudos to Judson and the crew at SAM and good going Joe.

Still got to do a little tuning on the pcm like raising the idle to 1150 and giving it a little more timing at idle. It's a little rich.

Maybe I can get down to BR and get on the drum at ThunderRacing and see what the AF ratio is like and find the shift points. I do know that this cam is a serious piece. It does not have alot of low rpm cylinder pressure so it takes some finess to start off at a light.

I also forgot to thank Linda.... Linda the next time I'm in town I'll make you some icecream.

I'm buying dinner if you let me drive it once or twice.

I'm going to give you a call tonight on your cell phone.

Hey Joe, shifting that high you might wanna looking into a stump puller gear ratio like Fireball(Brian) is running. He's running a 4:71 gear w/ his 229 cam, shifting at ~6800 with is nothing compared to your 7500+

Joe you wouldnt need that big a cam if you'd lose a few pounds!

Dude, don't rag on his weight or we won't get any homemade ice cream. It was good to hear that your problems were solved when ya called this morning. I can only imagine how awesome it sounds at 7,900! Where was your limiter set when you were in Bowling Green last September? I know it was over 7k, and when you would leave off of the limiter that car was SCREAMING! That's damn nice music to the ears.

Get those "old man" gears out of there, stick in AT LEAST a set of 4.88's, and let us know how it works when ya sidestep it at 7,500.

awesome joe. Good to hear you got it back on the road again. I don't think our racing will be any fun any more though...well..it won't be any fun for me anyway..heheheh. I found some "problems" with mine too that have been resolved but not enogh to make up for you cam change. Now put in some 4.88s and go set some hot weather 10s in that heave car you got. Shoot..since your getting 1000 more rpms out of it you may need alittle more gear...hehehehe...man...its gonna be wild.

Oh..trever..here is one of his BG runs with him leaving on the limiter...awesome.

Chris and Trevor if I could get the 30x9 Hoosier radial stocker tire on the car I would put the 5.13's in but since I'm stuck with the 28x10's I guess I'll go with the 4.88's.

Jason the next time I make homemade icecream at the track you just stand over to the side and watch the rest of us eat.

Joseph when I was handed the cam I ask that same question and I was told that information was on a need to know and I didn't need to know. I was told to put it in on 109, lash at .016 and have fun.

The cam came from LSM Systems Engineering and you don't even get a cam card and I didn't bother with doing alot of meassuring when I put it in.
