New SLP 1.85 rocker arm kit
I didn't see it on their web site yet, but it's in their ad in the new GMHTP mag. Steel 1.85:1 ratio rockers, valve springs/retainers/keepers for $599. *Claimed* 18 hp increase. Compared to the Crane rockers it's a pretty good price, but would it be worth it on a stock cammed motor? Might be a good alternative for someone planning to install a small sleeper cam on a daily driver. Comments?

Yes, a 1.85 would diffently give you a power increase. I suppose 18 HP maybe true.
The reason for increasing your rocker's ratio is to get more valve lift out of a stock cam.
If you build a motor from "scratch" then there is no advantage to more than 1.5 rockers because the cam you choose was probably meant for 1.5.
And anything more than 1.5 is just throwing off how the cam was designed.
One thing I would keep in mine. Is that you are probably either going to get new cyl. head covers or mill out those support pieces inside the stock ones, because there is not enough clearence (usually) for more than 1.5's.
Yet another thing I learned the hard way

you will get better gains from a cam, but if you just want a little more power without cracking open the motor beyond the valve covers, then the 1.85s will give a little more lift, and power.

Re: New SLP 1.85 rocker arm kit
So, from what I understand, going to 1.8 rockers would increase the lift of a stock .500 cam to .544. That was with the Cranes. 1.85 would bump it up a tad more. $599 for that could be a good buy for a lot of people, ecpecially since most wouldn't have to pay someone to install it. I've heard that the duration would increase slightly, as well. How would rockers increase duration, and by how much with these rockers? 18hp for 600 bucks is better hp per $ than many other mods.

Re: New SLP 1.85 rocker arm kit
don't these rockers have the same design as the stock ones??? if so , wouldn't they be suceptible the failing ( puking uot the bearings ) like the stock ones??? one of the benifits of the crane kit is that the rocker is a completley different design ( unpukable ) ...
on the other hand $599 for rockers and springs and retainers does sound good...

Re: New SLP 1.85 rocker arm kit
The question was asked as to how a set of rocker arms could increase a cams duration. Remember that cams don't really do much till they get the valves off the seat about .050 inches. Now... when looking at cams, there is the advertised specs and the .050 specs. Notice that the .050 specs show much less duration than the advertised specs, which are usually taken at .000 inches of valve lift. Changing the rocker arm ratio from the stock 1.7 to Cranes 1.8 or SLP's 1.85 will mean that you hit the .050 opening point a little sooner, and hit the closing .050 point a little later. This then brings the .050 spec a little closer to the advertised spec. The .000 spec will never change no matter what ratio you were to run.
Hope this helps out a bit......
I just put the 1.8's on my 98 Z with new springs... not ready to face the cam wars....
LOL
