Until I get an oil analysis done on my wife's car to compare before and after (she has old formula M1 in there now and when new formula arrives I will put it in, and go for 5k intervals with both) I can't say for sure, but word is so far that the new formula is not as good, it's antiwear package is not as good as the old one.

That GF-4 regulation is going to harm a lot of oils, although at the same time it might force more of them to use other additives, such as moly.

I wouldn't worry too much guys, it's not as if the oil is going to harm anything, it's just not as good as before. The worst that can happen is that you'll burn more oil using Mobil 1 and that'll make you want to switch sooner. In the long term if you constantly use the new Mobil 1, I don't think the engine will live as long, not if the antiwear package is not as robust as before. It's too bad, because Mobil 1 Advanced Formula (the one before Tri-synthetic), and the one before that, were incredible oils. I hope Mobil 1 doesn't go the way of Fram oil filters (which went from being the best oil filters, to being the absolute worst, bar none)

Can you get Royal Purple anywhere, or do you have to buy it by mail-order?

What about redline? I know of a shop that sells it right by where I live...is it any good?

Default The new Mobil 1 SuperSyn formula...yay or nay?

I'll be changing my oil probably this weekend or next, and to this point I've been running Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic.

Mobil 1 just released this new SuperSyn formula, I think to comply with the GF-4 standard, something about emissions and fuel economy.

I've heard in a few places that the flash points have gotten slightly lower and the pour points slightly higher, plus they changed the anti-wear package, replacing some phosphorous and zinc with some new anti-wear additive.

Has anyone heard any more information? Is this oil just as good for the LS1s, better, or worse?

It has been in my engine for about a week now. My pressure seems to be up about 3. Used to be about 37 now right at 40 after being warmed up.That is the only thing I have seen so far.

Redline is an excellent oil! Personally, I think it's the best out there, mainly because it uses the best base stocks and also contains moly too.

It is expensive, but you can easily go 10k on the stuff. The best way to determine the proper intervals for yourself though, is to take an oil sample at around 5k and have it analyzed. In most cases they will tell you the oil still has tons of life left (unless you are getting antifreeze or fuel into the oil somehow)

Their website says their motor oils are good for 10K miles...would every 5K be OK? It's like $8 a quart!

I hear Royal Purple is some good stuff but I don't care to spend 8 bucks for 1 quart of oil. Maybe when I get an alternative ride and can drive the car less and maybe make about 10K miles a year. That is just too much to spend on oil IMO.

How many miles should I put on this new Mobil 1??

I have never used a synthetic oil before so.... I dunno much about it.

the nice little old lady that owns the Chevrolet dealership where I bought my Camaro told me to keep it filled with Mobil 1, just like she has in her Corvette! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />
I don't drive a lot of miles in my car anymore; it's for weekend and ceremonial use only (about 5000 miles a year, so I change the oil every 6 months regardless of mileage), but I do agree that the cars that I've used Mobil 1 with seem to consume more oil than they did with dinosaur juice...
Is this the same with Royal Purple? I mean, I only get 2 oil changes a year, so I don't mind spending a little more if it's actually better than Mobil 1...

My fiances father works for a Toyota dealer ship.. some lady locked up the engine cause she NEVER changed the oil or filter. I was suprised the SUV went 70K without an oil change.

Another guy never changed the oil... just added when it was low that one went 100K.

Too many stupid people in the world...

Mobil 1 is a very good synthetic. IMHO if you are using any full sythetic you don't have a thing to worry about. It's really overkill. The type of oil you use really isn't going to make a difference in your engine as long as you stay away from dino oils that have a high polymer additive. I've seen more than one vehicle go over 100,000 miles without a SINGLE oil OR filter change. Sludge finally caught up with them and clogged the oil pickup though. The key is reguarly changing it to get rid of the dirt that gets carried by the oil.

I just recently switched from the old mobil 1 with ac delco filter to the newer mobil 1 with mobil 1 filter, both 10w30 weight and in hot weather (florida) in traffic i was getting 5-10 psi drop in oil pressure with this stuff.. IM gonna either try amsoil or RP next change and see if it goes back up. I have a 01" pump and changed it about 6K miles ago so i think its fine, just the new oil.. Anyone got any opionions on the amsoil? Which one is the thicker oil of the two?

The drop in pressure wasn't the oil, maybe caused by the oil filter? My pressure stayed the same.

On a sidenote, the best price I've found on RP is at www.oiltown.com

As far as the comparison between RP and Amsoil, the RP 10w30 has a viscosity of 10.1 cst at 100C, while Amsoil 10w30 is 11.9 at 100C, so Amsoil is quite a bit thicker. Redline is 11.0. Don't put quite so much faith in these numbers though, because with a better antiwear package, an oil with a slightly lower viscosity still could be a better oil for engine wear. I think Redline's main advantage is that moly is an incredible antiwear additive.

Here is an interesting comparison between Redline and Amsoil:
