I bought a cloyes/comp cam adjustable timing set and then found out the chain is supposed to be no better than stock. So I used the sprockets out of the set..they look stronger than stock and also got a katech jwis chain..supposed to be the same chain that is used on the c5 race cars..should be good enough for me.I am wondering slightly if I should have went with the slp double roller chain ..oh well always something different or better..

That was a great thread, thanks for the link and comparision. Just a question, though, I just bought the Cloyes IRL chian for my engine and spent $390.00 on it, Summit has it for $359.95, but is out of stock. How much is the JWIS chain and is it the same, or better the the Cloyes IRL 9-3153AL chain??
Thanks
Abe

Abe

The JWIS chain through Katech was $112 and will work great with the stock timing gears in the car. The JWIS chain is used in all the Katech motors including the C5R race setup, so it has to be strong to survive that and for Katech to use them. Just looking at and feeling the chain is really is a noticable difference than the stocker, and like I said, it is a direct replacement for the stock chain.
The Cloyes IRL chain has a great reputation, but I have not seen one nor do I know anybody that runs one. I would imagine the JWIS would hold up just as well.
Last thing, if you want to adjust your cam timing you can get the Cloyes adjustable timing kit and use the JWIS chain. Cloyes makes two seperate kits, one with the IRL chain and one with the stock GM chain.
Hope that helps

You can get the JWISS chain, which is made by HME, for around $95 + shipping from HME (phone number 931-648-3333) They make the chain for Katech

Thanks for the info guys, it's a great help. The IRL chain comes with the Hex adjust gears, but I really didn't need that, I just wanted a stronger chain..
Thanks again

I must have talked to the wrong person when I ordered my timing chain through Katech. He sold me a Hutton chain instead of the Jwis chain, and it actually ended up being looser than the stock chain! I ended up using the stock replacement chain that comes with the Cloyes set. Mikey at Rapid said he has seen some problems with the Cloyes gears, so I decided not to use it. I ended up feeling like I had wasted my money on the Hutton chain and on the Cloyes gears. The stock chain really isn't that bad. IMO, replacing it with anything more than a stock replacement is a waste of money unless you have a really radical setup.

I think the damage with labor was about $4k.

I'm not disputing that there have been failures with the stock chain. What I am saying is that the chain I was sold (Hutton) was no better than stock. Anybody else have any experience with the Hutton chain? I am wondering why Katech sold me this chain if the JWIS chain is so much better. My other point was that there have been failures with the Cloyes timing gears, as well. Feel free to e-mail Mikey at Rapid Motorsports if you doubt me. He has seen it personally.
