Shop smart. One c-note will get you done. Don't pay attention to those who chatter about "this is the gasket you need, with the un-obtanium inserts". Someone is always trying to sell something. Just get some good stock gaskets, a few valves, some bolts, and use good mechanical practices. You'll be fine.

Here we are now, day whatever it is on the cam install. I've gotten the intake torn off, heads stripped down, waterpump out of the way and power steering pump off to the side (which was a MAJOR pain I might add).
Now, all that is left is to take off the headers and pull the bolts on the heads. That is the task in place for tommorrow.
At a glance, with all the rockers off and using a straight edge it definatly appears that the exhaust valves must all be bent as they don't come back up into the close position with the springs free of the rockers.
Soooooo... Just how tough would it be for me to replace the valves myself? Would I be best served just letting the machine shop handle it? Man, I never knew the cam install was going to be so expensive! Exactly what parts am I going to HAVE to replace on the reinstall, I heard mention so far of head bolts and gaskets, is that it? And here I thought I was just kidding about needing to have a bake sell! Anyone wanna buy some cookies?

Sorry to read about your disasters ! But its not just a matter of changing the valves, the seats will most probably need to be recut, the bent valves will have pounded low spots in your seats and will still leak if you just replace the valves without grinding the seats. Stop f king up - take your and do it right so as your nightmare can be over !

9 pages later, and now I don't remember what cam he was going with or if he ever replaced the valve springs... Sorry to read about your misfortune, but I hoped you learned from this, I know I have And look at it this way, by the time this is all over, you'll really know you LS1 well

Day 2 post cam install, and it still won't start... Everyones ideas have been exhausted and it's my daily driver. I'm beyond sick. There is just nothing showing up to be the culprit and it's pissing me off. I've taken a personal day off today I'm so sick with stress and disgust. Here is the thread I've been working with thus far on LS1.COM for some background:

For all the great advice I got, I still found nothing. I'm hoping maybe I'll find someone else out her in the LS1TECH community that has that one solid sparkling answer.. .
Anyone a mechanic or know one that travels and works for peanuts? This project has left me broke both financially and emotionally...

The valves were opening at the wrong time the cam was improperly installed. This caused the piston to valve contact.

Its been a good week or so and it's still running strong! I owe most of it all to you guys! There were several points I wasn't sure I'd ever see it run again... Glad to prove myself wrong.

I understand the cam was installed wrong but did you determine exactly why it was installed wrong and how could you have avoided it?
What all did you have to get done to fix it?
Just trying to avoid this if and when I do my own.

I'm not sure what happened there, I was working on another part at that time.
I think the real trouble was that we just had to many people to keep up with (there were 4 of us doing different things at the same time).
As to the damage. When it was installed wrong it caused the valves to open at the incorrect timing-which in turn made the intake valves smack into the pistons when it was cranked over. This bent all 8 of the intake valves and actualy bent 4 of the hardened pushrods. So at that point it was necessary to remove the heads and replace the valves. Then you get to reinstall the heads and get it all back together.
I did the reassembly by myself, while it took quite a bit, I knew everything that was done and was able to make sure I had it right before I turned it over. I learned a WHOLE LOT from the ordeal.
Moral is: Don't get in a hurry, check and recheck EVERYTHING, own a Helms manual, and have good friends to help out in a pinch (If not for some of the tool loans, etc, I would have never made it).
