Re: How to get rid of ticking noise???
Hi Trav, Which noise do you have, the piston slap(when engine is cold), or the ticking noise that sounds like a lifter sometimes? My car had the piston slap noise and for the summer I switched to 15-50 Mobil One to see what it would do. Well the piston slap noise went away, but now my engine makes the ticking noise all the time and only below 2000 rpm. I will switch back to the 10-30 very soon because I would rather the piston slap(only when cold), than the constant ticking I get now. I hope this helps somebody. Jimmy

does it tick all the time? or just under a certain rpms? Have you dont that AIR mod? If you have headers and didnt put a little plate with a tiny hole drilled in it the check air valves will tick at certain rpms then go away after a certain point.
If you hear ticking when crosses bridges or passing cars its a exhaust leak.. usually any ticking sound is exhaust leaking somewhere..

Re: How to get rid of ticking noise???
Ya im starting to think its a exhuats leak.. no i don't have headers... but i did take the cats out.. so maybe there is a leak. I agree with the piston slap over the ticking.. it only ticks some times tho.. hot or cold.. just outa no where some times i'll notice the ticking.. so that means it cant be the exhuats? cuz it would to consitent wouldn't it? ya it's time for a oil change so i'll try the same oil as u did joghotrod.. do u no if it makes a difference if i use synthetic or not? Thanx

Hi again Trav, I,m not sure if it matters which kind of oil to use but I think synthetic is thinner and I have read on here that Mobil one is thinner than the other brands so I would try it first. Thats what I use. Let us know if it works for you. Jimmy

Travis......
At least give this a try. It only take a minute:

I have posted this many times before. If you have a tapping sound, piston slap is a very good possibility, but before you convince yourself that you indeed have piston slap, bent pushrods, noisy injectors, etc, at least try this first:
Start your cold engine in the morning. After about 1 minute, does it start “tapping”? Tapping lasts until the engine warms up and then stops? You may just be a victim of the “Purge Valve From Hell”. Your fuel vapor purge valve is located right next to the #1 fuel injector. That’s the most forward injector on the driver’s side. One of the hoses that are wrapped in silver tape mounts to this valve.
Now that you have identified the purge valve, start your [cold] engine and let it idle. As soon as the tapping sound starts, unhook the electrical connector to the valve (while engine is still idling).
If the tapping sound stops, you have found the problem. Your warranty will replace the valve, but it’s just a crapshoot whether you get a quiet one or not. If you are not under warranty, I believe the valve costs under $35.
