Default Best cam with stock heads and Mac's?

I am considering the HotCam very seriously because it is nearly 1/2 the price of the competitors at $400. The TR224 will make about 15 hp and 10lbft more than the HotCam. Is the additional cost worth it? I really like the HotCam's lopey idle which is also a selling point since i am an old hot rodder and i miss the idle which we do not get with these cars. Anybody have any advice? I know everybody has a good and bad story about everything so every opinion counts. Thanks James.

Most other cams will not only make more power, but have better drivability characteristics.

I personally would recommend the MTI B1 cam. It seems to make great power and you can even run it with stock tuning. And it's emmissions legal too!

Go with cams that are working on this board right now. Remember.. Tuning is important. Do not swap cams if you are not willing to get her tuned. Many change cams and come on the board and complain about a loss in power. One thing that is consistent with their complaints. "I have not tuned the car yet.."

If cost is a factor, I'd do one of two things: I'd either wait for another cam GP from one of the sponsors, or I'd pick up used parts. Being a hydraulic roller, buying a used cam isn't an issue. If you're going to go for a nice lope, at least get a cam that will make nice power, too. The hotcam is not one of the better contendors. A 224/224 cam will get you a nice lope, and it will perform much better than the hotcam. As Vince said, just get it tuned for max power and drivability.

I'm running MTI's C2(224 112 .581") cam on stock heads in my daily driver. I have had it in for about a month and a half, and have been running the stock converter the whole time. I see you have a 3500 stall converter and 3.73's, so it would be even milder for you. The cam idles pretty well and there isn't much chugging at low rpm's. The car makes great power. Haven't had a chance to get any good track times or dyno numbers yet. I've been suprised at how streetable this cam is. It has a nice lope to it.

When I get heads, I'll probably switch to an even bigger cam.

Thanks for all the posts guys. I have LS1 Edit so tunning is not a consern. I have a friend who is running the C2 cam and self-ported headds and can only get 12.7's with numerous other bolt-ons(TA) but this is a place of 3600 feet elevation. Another friend had the B1 cam with no head work and same other mods and ran 12.8's as well(Camaro). A friend who has the TR224 and ARE heads doesn't doesn't do any better(TA), with nearly identical mods as the other two. All these were M6 cars. My ST3500 will only foot break to 2000 rpm on DR's however i usually just flash it, M.T.s are coming. I don't want a cam to cause me to bogg outta the whole because it has lost so much bottom end for a 5500 to 7000 power band. Who here thinks that the C2 cam or comparable with stock heads, MAC headers and all other bolt-ons in my sig will work. Remember i don't want crazy just really good all around performance. My car has run a best of 13.40 at 101mph with a 1.92 60ft. Drivability is not a big factor, i can change it and i'm used to much much worse than i'll ever encounter now. Thanks again. James.

Since I don't have my converter installed, the car will bog off the line, but I think that will go away when I get the converter installed. I'll let you know how it does when I get the 3200 in.
