Cam opinions wanted: XE-R 226
Car--A4, 3.23, FLP Level IV 4L60E, FLP Longtubes, ST3500.
Goal: Road Race/Fun Street Car
In about 4 weeks I'll get my heads back from the local porter I'm trying out. Valves are 2.02/1.55 Ferrea with Comp 918 springs. I'll wait for final cam selection until I get the flow sheets, but I need to get started on the decision.
Eventually it will be a turbo car, but I'm not too worried about putting in a turbo friendly cam since it is easy to swap in a new cam when the time comes. Although if I can, I may as well.
My thoughts so far:
XE-R 226/226 .575/.575 114ls
Thoughts?

Thinking about it again, maybe I should stick with a XE-R 224. That should bring the RPM down a bit even with the 114ls.

232/232 .585/.585 112lsa... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

If his car has a more typical 3580 lb raceweight, then he will trap closer to 116mph, which is a huge difference.

Nice call Verbs <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
But, I was figuring that most would take into account the full set-up of my car.
I'm not trying to type a novella on my car, but rather give a brief synopsis of it in hopes that what works would be apparent. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Re: Cam opinions wanted: XE-R 226
My car definitely isn't a lightweight. It does go to the drag strip, but it definitely isn't set up for that. Full weight, very stiff suspension, etc.
Hell, I didn't know anyone else was running a 226 .575 114 cam.
I won't be running stock heads either though. I'm experimenting with a very experienced head porter here in KC. They may not flow like the big dogs, but they should be better than stock.

Re: Cam opinions wanted: XE-R 226
I want to clear one thing up.. The 226 XE-R's lift is .585 and some of them have spec'd .584. Like that really makes a difference. Where are people getting 3580lbs race weight. Either you guys are all under 140lbs or there are hidden sandbags in my car. Granite I am not a small person, but I think 3600lbs plus with a driver is the stock weight of our cars. 3580lbs is more like a car with some weight reduction. I.E., no backseat, no passenger seat, no spare or jack, 1 or 2 gallons of gas in the car. My car was trapping at a consistent 116mph with 3750lbs with cam/headers/DR's/3.42's/2.0 60ft. I had the T1 cam at that time. I have the 226 XE-R cam now. It idles great, but I have noticed no performance over the T1.

Re: Cam opinions wanted: XE-R 226
Does the XE-R lobes add lift? I thought the XE-R lobes were just a very fast ramp lobe.
Maybe I'm missing something.

Re: Cam opinions wanted: XE-R 226
Let me make sure I'm understanding correctly.
If I order a XE-R 226/226 .575/.575 114ls, its actual lift with be .585?

My XE-R 224/224 112 LSA with two degrees of advance ground in peaks at 6,550 RPM. However, I'm shifting at 6,800 for max ET at the track. Remember, you want to shift a few hundred RPM past your peak HP for max ET. So, considering where you want to shift, the XE-R 224/224 might be a nice choice. Get it with a total of four degrees ground in, and it should bring the peak down a little if you prefer.

Re: Cam opinions wanted: XE-R 226
I'm definitely no expert on the subject, but wouldn't a 226 XE-R be too much cam for a ST3500 and 3.23's? I'm thinking more of a 222 XE-R on 112 w/ 4 ground in. What do the shifts drop back down to on a ST3500 w/ 3.23's? 4700-4800? 4800-6800 seems like a lot of wasted time somewhere to me. Is it even going to cross the traps near peak? let alone a few hundred rpms past it? IMO I get something that peaked near 6100-6200 and shift at 6400 max.
just my $.02 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
btw, my 226 XE-R came w/ .581 lift <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />
later,
Steve

Re: Cam opinions wanted: XE-R 226
Im running a Futral Motorsports 226/226 575/575 114 cam. So far we've only rev'd it to about 6600, but plan on trying it higher (6800). With stock heads I've run 119 mph with this set-up. I think a 226 cam will net you predictable power that will be more than satisfactory.
Also, although my cam is ground by a different manufacturer the lobes should be similar in agressiveness to the XE-r lobes. So I would suspect your performance to be similar to mine.
