So whats the latest news on fixing the PCV system and oil consumption. I know there are several "solutions" out there, but are any of these proven yet? Is there one way that is considered the best? My car generally consumes approx. 1.5-2 quarts per 3K miles.

This is the thread that has me exited--I think his solution will be in my future (even though it cost's a little much)

Go to this site:
http://www.installuniversity.com/
On left pick INSTALL DOCUMENTS
scroll down to ENGINE and there are two PCV valve mods. The first is for '97 and the second is '98-'02. The second one has lots of detail explaination and some lab testing. He also says that GM will not repair, but rather said that it doesn't affect the car which we know isn't the case!
Good luck! Let us know if it works. I'll probably do mine this weekend if I can find the parts.

Going with the new truck PCV and mounting it vertically seemed to help me quite a bit. I was using about a half quart in 700 miles and now I’m using about a quarter quart in 700 miles. So I’ve gone from just over 2 quarts in 3000 miles to about 1 quart in 3000 miles. 50% reduction isn’t bad <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> I would like to get it down to 0 though...

I tried the vertical PCV, the 'truck' PCV (the one with no actual valve) and the SMH PCV mod (2 fuel filters inline). None of them did jack. The SMH mod lowered my oil pressure about 5psi at idle. The fuel filters would be saturated in 100 miles. I ran GM Top End cleaner through my car and the intake was a lake of oil within 500 miles.
Don't waste your time with those. I will report back after some track miles with my results with the Greddy.

Dope-- I'm looking forward to your results...it looks like a promising solution to a very common problem...

I have one of the filtration devices on my 99 consisting of the two fuel filters and the drop can..can't remember the name right now. My last two oil changes I have used no oil (thats noticable on the dipstick) where as before I was using a 1-1.5 quarts every 3K. Plus it stopped the pinging that my car seemed to have a problem with.

Dope, after seeing the Greddy on your car and how it seems to be working and not a restriction, I just bought 2 for my cars. I too use alot of oil due to the pcv and thats just stupid.

Here is my setup that I installed on sunday for a total investment of $30. It is a Watts Fluidair filter (Kittory,Maine) with a good, strong manual/automatic drain valve and excellent flow capabilities. Part#F504-02AH . The filter actually can be tucked into a spot on the intake manifold and pulled out only when you want to drain it as seen in the photos. I haven't seen one puff of smoke at WOT shifts since I installed it and I am running it with the original stock PCV.

Here's my homemade catch-can. Everything's from the hardware store. I spent way too much time on this.
The can is made from ABS plastic pipe parts, with various fittings and inner pipe added. It unscrews in the middle for cleaning and filter replacement (note the filter inside) - first shot shows it unscrewed. It stops the oil, no loss of vacuum.

Put a catch can in line between the passenger valve cover outlet and the PCV valve. That will cure it. I made one 4 months ago and I have no oiling problems anymore.
