Default rebuild the LS1 or buy a pre-built short block?

I'm wanting a forged block. My goal is to someday procharge it and hit over 500 rwhp. Right now I'm sitting at 420rwhp on a stock bottom end. The only mods I have done to the motor are ported LS6 heads and a 22x/22x .581 Comp Grind cam. I've got an LS6 intake, LS6 t.b., and a few other bolt-ons.

Now... I've got a few questions...
I've got about 3,000 to spend. Let's keep in mind I'm wanting to buy a rear-end in the future.

*1* What do you think I would pay for parts and a rebuild on my block? looks like $5700!!!
*2* How much would I pay a sponsor for a budget, pre-built block? If I do this, I'd like to have it cammed, heads, and a forged bottom. edit: looks like about $6000!!!!
*3* Forged LS2 vs. Forged LS1?
*4* How much would I be able to get out of my block with it's mods? Sits at 101k.

are those rebuild prices for real??? I can buy a new built engine for that! I'm sure I can find good deals and buy all these parts for $2500 or less.?!?

im going through the same situation from what i have come up with a rebuild wont save you much money, parts and machine shop costs add up . a forged short block will be the best bet as far as im concerned. 3000 wont get you far either way , that will hardly buy the short block!!

I bought my built shortblock from Lingenfelter for 2K, not bad at all. Stock rods and crank but the better rod bolts.

yeah. power is expensive!

2k isn't bad at all! how much did it cost you to have the heads, cam, lifters & all installed? was the money worth it?

from your mods, I'm guessing you're looking for something that can handle that turbo what kind of power are you putting down?

$1500 from a local shop. Included modifiying the stock oil pickup, installed timing chain, worked on the heads, degreed cam, crane rockers. Not bad at all.

Hmmm I am in the same boat too.

My '99 z28 spun a bearing from the lack of oil pressure and I am determining what to do. I would like to put a forged 408, but I dont know how to go about doing it. Sorry for the hijacking. Shoud I go out and purcahse a block and build it up on a fresh block or is it worth just boring, and honing my current block and putting a forged 408 rotating assembly.???

Making a 408 out of an LS1 block is way to expensive - you would need to re-sleve the block and that is mucho bucks.

Quick Reply: rebuild the LS1 or buy a pre-built short block?
