maybe it was just a bad one from factory. I see where a few guys broke 918's on here with the TR224 cam, which is really the same cam as mine. I was only revving 6400 also

Man that sux...

I've had my 941's in my car for a lil over 10K miles without a problem. Have you thought about tryin a set of 941's? FYI, i dont beat on my car in the morning, and always let it warm up to temp before driving the car aggressively.

There was a post a while back when someone asked if he could use his comp 941's with his TR-224 cam. I remember "Vince" (screename) tellin him absolutely not, and to go with the 918's. Vince, another 918 broke though...

The car was well warmed up before I atapped also. I had been driving around for 15 mins or so. I know some arent gonna believe these break unless something is done wrong. But the install of these is really only one way. I guessing it was the sound I heard from the engine bay when it snapped Damn I just hope nothing else is screwed up. I cant get the spring off till i get the spring compressor. But the pushrod wasnt bent or anything(chromemoly)

I read that Crane recommends that you check the spring pressure before you install them. I can only assume they do not check each spring themselves. Why I don't know. I'm going to run 918's with the 226/.570 cam I just bought. Where can I get a spring pressure checker?

Yep looks like it snaped in two places. I think you got a weak spring from the start. I have had my 918s in since the first of november with my B1 cam and my car is a daily driver and track car on the weekends. These springs are ALOT stronger than my old K-motion springs and probably the best out there so far. Stick with them cause they do hold up well, just pobably got a bad one.

might wanna do a compression test to see if you bent a valve.

I had a lifter go out and it broke one of my 918's.

This kind of talk scares the crap out me. I have a TR 224 and CC 918's sitting on my shelf, waiting to be installed. More often than not, I can boot up the old computer and find comments about people breaking the 918's.

I broke a 918 in two different places with my TR224 cam on a 114LSA. I have a friend that broke one too with a 227 cam on a 112LSA

Once again, who knows where to get a spring pressure checker? That seems to be a must do thing with any spring.

as far as the TR224 breaks, its good to see im not the only one with a similair cam breaking 918's

im still scared s%itless that i screwed something else up, but hopefully i didnt.

There have been a number of posts about this in several forums and threads. I had a catastrophic 918 failure at about 6krpm which punched a hole in the head and in the piston. On another thread elsewhere Comp Cams was quoted as blaming installers for these failures, and recommended that all springs be checked before installation with a checker!! While the latter would indeed be a good backup, it seems to me that factory QA could weed out the overtly bad ones beforehand. Breakages thereafter could be ascribed to installation issues, springs working beyond design spec, or bad luck. Which one could be sorted out, and would allow Comp Cams to compensate those who were victims of bad fortune rather than those either negligent or due to a bad install.

For my part, I'm rebuilding my engine as an ARE 436. I'm looking forward to the result, but certainly hadn't planned on doing this now.

I wonder if tight fitting retainers are a cause of the problem...

I know the comp Ti retainers are really really tight in the springs and I'm not 100% sure about the stock retainers.

If they are tight...Frictional heating can really be bad I suppose...might affect valvetrain geometry as well I suppose

Comp Cams used to claim that their Conical Valve Springs were tested for 10 Million cycles.
Where are these things made???

11 bravo, you can probably go to your local machine shop. they should be able to test them for a minimal charge, by the way i heard the guy you bought that 226/.570 cam from is one hell of a good looking son of a gun

i really get a kick out of the people that jump on these threads and totally bash the 918s. gimme a break! things break- it doesnt mean everyone will break them. you hear of more of them breaking because MORE people have them now. cams are a huge rage now, so obviously there will be more of them floating around. factor defects happen. it shouldnt, but they do. theres a lot of strain on those suckers. i have a comp 224 112 cam and have put maybe 1200 miles in a total of 10 days of installing it. i have the 918 springs and no problems. you can go driving and get hit by a drunk driver or crash. does that mean you should never drive? if you have a fear of one breaking, do a test, like the reccomend. or else go to a larger double spring. it gets old when people come here and say "lately ive been seeing 918s break left and right" seems you people are just here to stir the pot. just my opinon though.
