Default Listen to my valvetrain and tell me what you think

Here's the link: http://engineer.101main.com/audio/vt.wav

You may have to hit refresh to get it to play. This was recorded with the hood up on my car ('98 vette) with ported heads and CompCams 224/224 .581/.581 114 cam. This thing sounds like a dozen sewing machines on steroids. Is this normal? WTF? I hate the sound, but am worried something isn't right. I'm going to check lifter preload tomorrow. Would too long a pushrod cause this, or is it too short a pushrod that causes the clacking?

TTT-
I'm interested to know, yeah that's louder than mine. I don't have the same cam you do but most aftermarket valvetrain sounds the same.
hm....

Mine was kind of loud when I did'nt get all of the rockers tightened properly but not that loud. To me it sounds as if something is either broken or bent. Have you looked at the valve springs closely? I would start by pulling the valve covers and looking very carefuly.

Mine is that loud too - if not louder

I dont know what it is yet - it could be valve train issues - but I have a feeling it is a header leak I cant visually see..

I would pull the push rods and inspect them - as in rolling them individually on a glass or hard level surface to make sure they all are straight..

That definitely does not sound good. Mine is not even that bad, and I am running a 224 with more lift.

You running dual or single springs? Mine have a seat pressure of 130lbs and I'm running an aggressive XE-R cam which has steep ramps. It doesn't sound like the sound is coming from the top of the valve covers. It's more like I hear it from underneath and in the wheel wells.

That doesn't sound right. This is mine right after installing the same cam. http://www.sigma-epsilon.org/steve/i...7/MVC-196V.MPG

I have ARE stage 2 heads with the 944-17 doubles. Stock rocker arms that are pocketed to fit over the larger retainers, new pushrods that ARE supplied and original lifters. Yes it sounds like a very mild sewing machine, but nothing like that.

Thanks for posting that derty. I'll check my rockers to make sure they're not hitting the retainers. I'm also going to check my lifter pre load to determine if different pushrods are in order. My cam's spec card doesn't have the base circle measurement so if yours is a Compcams' make, then I'd appreciate the dimensions.
