I would like some opinions on this cam spring setup. Would there be long term reliability problems with this setup?
Are double springs recommended with this cam?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info. Vince.
So far I have located three people with the 226/.591 cam and two have broken 918 springs:
Speed Hog - broke a spring - needed new engine
TransAmaniac - broke a spring - engine ok?
Moose has this cam but has not broken a spring

Thanks PhatT/A:
That gives us:
Speed Hog - broke a spring - needed new engine
TransAmaniac - broke a spring - engine ok?
Moose - no problems at - 2,000 miles
PhatT/A - no problems at - 3,000 miles
2 for 2

Derty, how's your valvetrain noise? Mine is crazy Do you happen to know what the base circle measurement is on that cam. I called Comp and they couldn't tell me, even with the part number and serial no of my cam. WTF?

Similiar cam to yours, 227/227 .591/.591 113 LSA. I have 987 dual springs with no problems at all, I wouldn't even touch the 918's, 2 of my friends both had way less aggressive cams and had the springs fail on them after several days, one needs a new motor a result . Just food for thought .

Noise is nowhere near yours. Yes it sounds like a very quiet sewing machine. I don't have my spec card here. When I get home tonight I can pull the details off it. I also don't remember the pushrod length, but they were not the same size as the stock rods if I remember correctly.

I ran the same cam with 918 springs... I didn't have that combo together for a long time, but had no problems while it was in the car.

98TAauto:
Hope your car is ok. Is Jason going to look at it?
I broke a 941 a few months back but my engine is ok.

CompCams seems to think there's no problem with the 918's, despite a number of posts about this.
I'd go with the duals if you want some peace of mind, though the singles do allow slightly more radical port work (per Wade, Nick at ARE).

I am running the 918's with a 224 and over.600" lift with no problems. I have a little valve train noise cruising at lower RPMs, but other than that it is not bad.
