Did you check to see if the timing was correct (i.e. dot-to-dot) when you took the cam back out?

This is purely the consequence of an improper cam install (having the cam dot-to-dot)

NastyC5 is correct. This is clearly a case of wrong phasing of the camshaft to the crankshaft.

It is a shame that the cam and crank sprockets weren't compared to the website picture BEFORE they were taken off. Of particular interest is the location of the cam's dowel pin and the crank sprockets keyway.

As already mentioned, a defect or nick in either of the sprockets can easily be mistaken for the "dot" and mess up the phasing.

EXTREME CARE must be taken if you are using a timing chain set with a multikeyed lower sprocket which allows you to advance or retard cam timing a few degrees. They have several "dots" which require you to match the CORRECT keyway slot. For example, a triangle "dot" on the outside of the lower sprocket requires the use of the keyway slot marked with a triangle on the inside of the lower sprocket. The small square "dot" on the outside requires the use of the keyway marked by a small square "dot" on the inside etc. If not matched correctly, disasterous results like yours are common.

Regarding the fears expressed about installing the TR224 cam: This cam has plenty of piston clearance and will not cause any coil bind problems with 918 springs utilizing stock retainers and rockers. Installation of the rear passenger springs is EASY if you use my homemade spring compressor shown in the link below:
