Well me and a buddy of mine have done about 8 cams total. all installs ok. Well yesterday me and my friend decided to install another buddy of mine's cam. Well everything went well, lined it up dot to dot, double, and triple checked everything like we always do. so everythings back together and we go to start it. nothing happaned. So we decided to try again and still nothing it would crank over but not start. Just the valve train would move, but wouldn't start up. Everytime we shut it off( from trying to start it up) the RPM and MPH would go up and then fall back down. So we checked the spark plugs and they were all coo. Then the worst!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We took off the valve covers and notice one of the rocker arms is off to the side of the valve then we notice about 4-5 other rockers exploded( all where torqued correctly. So we tare down everything again but we dont pull the cam out. we take the rockers off and about three of the hardened pushrods are broke in half, and two bent. At this point I almost fainted. we stuck the magnets in the the pushrod holes and rotate the cam and some of the magnets went up and then fell down again, while the others stayed up. ( good thing we didnt pull the cam out) What could of caused all of THIS. I'm hella stressin cause this **** has never happaned before. Could it have been a bad cam or some weak stuff in the motor that just gave out. I know the install went correctly. and remember the Motor didnt even START UP. all this happened and the motor didnt even turn on.
HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Did some lifters fall? It sounds like a few lifters fell and you just put the pushrods in on top of the cam . Some bent and some just screwed up the rockers. That's were I would start.

Oh Boy! Uhh, just check everything over again and start from scratch? Something else you may want to check also is, in loue of breaking some hardened push rods, I believe you may have compressed a couple few lifters which in it's self is not good.
Good Luck!
Joe.

i know the lifters didn't fall cause we used the magnets to hold them and they were all stuck. I already have almost everything off. I'm gonna pull the heads off tommarrow, what im I gonna need, and its possible for a Valve to slap a piston didnt hear anything smacking while trying to start it. Its the TR 224 cam.

Stupid question, but you did replace the valvesprings with aftermarkets right? Don't the stockers coil bind at .530ish or so?

"Something aint right..." (no sheet Sherlock)
Either the cam is 180 out and the pistons were hitting valves, or the rocker arm torqueing was'nt done correctly.
Thats all that i can think that would do it.
Rarely is it a mechanical failure rather than a install mis step.
Any chance the cam walked on ya?
Did you turn over the motor by hand a few times when the plugs were out and after the cam/valvetrain was in?
This is a good step to check by hand BEFORE attempting the crank the bad boy up. You can tell a lot with a ratchet on the crank bolt that you cant tell when sitting in the interior cranking on a key.
Man, you got me mighty interested in what the problems cause, ends up being. Please share with us when you find out.
Good Luck.

well we did torque all the rocker arms correctly and the cam was dot to dot. I checked, my friend check and another friend checked. We always have a triple check. We also turned the cam and everything seemed ok. I pulled the drivers side head today, and all the valves were bent and kissed the pistons(eyebrow marks). how can you tell a lifter is messed up? they looked good to me. only the plastic that holds the lifters broke.
monday the passanger side comes off. thanks alot guys for the help

The cam must have been ground 180* out of phase if it was installed dot to dot, ie: the picture below:

I've seen it happen on the CorvetteForum. However, it didn't chew up pistons, valves, etc the car just wouldn't start He found out the cam was ground 180* out-of-phase.

Another overlooked possibility is that there was a mis-shift. On the LS1, it is common that If you miss a shift with a 6-speed that you can bend a pushrod. If you got a new cam, that could be why you shattered a few of them. In this case, starting from scrath will fix it. Get new pushrods anyways. Also, if it is an auto, you can still ebnd pushrods but it is harder. Are there any other mods? Is there a stall, could depend on a lot of things.
