Default Break-in question for my new ARE 436ci

I will be asking Nick and Mike Norris as well, I just wanted your opinions to.

My motor is shipping to Norris Motorsports for install. Its in Orlando, 160 miles from my home in Ft. Lauderdale.
Should I drive it home being all highway miles, or trailer it home to be brokin-in during city driving.
I'm also installing a new FLP IV and a Strange 12 Bolt. I don't know if they need any special break-in.

Thanks

After I got done doing this to Mike Norris, I'd hunt you down and give ya some-a-this on your head till you and gave up the keys.

Don't forget to give both of them one of these.

Just make sure to vary the RPMs (and change gears if its M6) and you should be fine. Don't just hit the cruise control. Mix it up.

Quickin - I got that smilie from "the other site" and saved it to my webspace. Then I just linked to it.

On the break-in question. Break it in like you intend to drive it everyday. I went WOT right outta the dealer lot with my '00 SS and that thing ran great until its last day.(Can we have a moment of silence for it.)

Like IHateNairbs said vary your rpms but, don't be afraid to get on it a little. By varying your rpm you get oil to places that might not get oil at a certain rpm.

Have fun! I'm sure you will.

So if I take it home on the highway for 3 hours, just keep moving the pedal and varying my speed the whole time?

I was told to drive it like normal. Even take it out the strip. Mine has 30wt breakin oil now, but have to change to 20-50wt after 1000 miles.
On my way home, I blip the throttle and it comes out of overdrive and sounds like a formula 1. Gets everybodys attention on the freeway. You'll love it!

Leo,

Did you upgrade the tranny and rear-end as well?

Maybe I'll take a long ride home with it than.

Yes, to both.
I have a 12 bolt DTS just like Harlan's.
My trannie was also just rebuilt by Dana at Pro Built.

Nick told me to give my motor about 100 miles of break-in. My trip home was mostly highway, I varied my speeds, including using up to 50% throttle and occasionally ran in 3rd (A4), just to vary things.

Is there a non-interstate that you could take at least part of the way home? A little stop and go and some rural highway plus your driving would mix it up well, then just hit he interstate for the last 100 miles or whatever.

on brand new engines, as in off the dealer lot or crate motors from GM, not rebuilds, I've been told by people wiser than myself that it's best to baby it the fist couple of hundred miles meaning keep it under 2500 or so RPM. after an oil change, ( in my case as soon as I leave the dealers lot ) and 1500 or so miles, I start driving them like I would from then on. I've personally had seven new vehicles and had no major problems with any of them. On engine rebuilds the block has been 'seasoned', meaning any shifting or warpege in the casting has already occured and corrections should have taken place during the rebuild. that being the case, on a rebuild, if you are so inclined take that puppy out and drive it like you stole it.

Visit NASA, then take it home that way on I-95. By the time I get home she'll be busted-in.

SSteveL,
Now its supposed to ship tomorrow, it never made the truck on Wednesday This is killing me man. I've had a set of Baer brakes, suspension parts, exhaust tips, springs and a STB just sitting in my house for 6 months. The shop has had my rear-end and tranny to, just collecting dust. Maybe this isn't supposed to be. Maybe I should have just bought that used (but mint) Skyline R-34 with the left hand drive conversion.

I have an ARE 427 that uses no oil, approxilately 6500 miles, and has simply been flawless. The best hipo motor I have ever owned from any of the top tuners. Get it out on the highway and vary the RPM for the first several hundred miles. Do not be afraid to pull this motor to 6500 during the break-in process. Pull the break-in oil after 500 miles and replace with a 10-40W or 15-40W synthetic. I would not recommend a 20-50W oil for numerous reasons. Enjoy your new ride.

What you should do is put the wt oil your tuner tell you for your engine.
