Default CNC LS6 or Stage II LS1 Heads?

Need some help here please. I am pretty sure I will be purchasing a set of heads and cam setup shortly but could use some experienced advise. The LS6 CNC ported heads 2.00/1.55 from SDPC look very attractive as does a good set of Stage II LS1 heads 2.02/1.57 from MTI or GTP. Cam will probably be in the 220-224 range with .55X-.56X lift. Does anyone have a guess at which will put down better numbers at the dyno/track. All help greatly apprecited before I drop some bucks...

A set of ported LS6 Heads will perform better than a set of ported LS1 heads. However, what you need to justify is the hp/$. On a stock cubed motor, the LS6 head is only going to provide minimal gains over a well ported LS1 head. Somewhere in the area of 15 HP.
Now, if you are larger than stock cubes (346 ci+) then I would recommend the LS6 heads, because with the increased airflow and ci, the split in performance difference and HP/$ is going to start becomming very apparent. Many people with larger than stock ci, pushing the big numbers run some form of the LS6 porting.

Good Luck

Thanks NOGO.

The LS6 heads mentioned above are coming out cheaper than a quality pair of Stage II LS1 heads. About $2000 assembled with no core charge! Just want to make sure I am not missing something critical here.

I think the ls6 heads they are selling aren't ported though. It says cnc'd but also says that they are stock ls6 heads. Maybe someone else will be able to clarify this.

The GMPP LS6 heads are CNC ported...I've got a few good pics of the ports if anyone wants to host them.

It's about how much money you are willing to spend.. Your cam choice sounds great.. I think the CNC Lingenfelter LS6 heads would be fine, but if you want more performance and plan to go with a slightly higher lift cam. Then go with the Stage 2's.. I could be wrong though..

Thanks all. I will call SDPC later today since I still have a few questions. I believe the LS6 heads flow best at about .525 lift so a milder cam like a stock LS6 cam or ASA cam might be more appropriate for the LS6 heads. Definetly a smoother combination than Stage II LS1 heads and a .55x-.56x lift cam. However I suspect the stage two and more aggresive cam will put down better numbers. Anyone have any thoughts on the high compression of the milled LS6 heads...something like 10.8:1, is that something to be concerned about?

I think the ASA cam 226/236 .525/.525 lsa 110 was designed for CNC LS6 heads.. A milder 114 lsa would probably be better for a street car.. There are several post about this..

I believe the SDPC heads are not milled at all, & the combustion chambers are deliberately left large for FI applications.

A .030" cut should raise your compression by a half-point or so, & is still very streetable, at least on 93 octane.

HitmanSS-

SDPC sells two versions of the LS6 ported heads. One version is not milled at all and can be customized any way you like. The other version is milled .055 to create 60 CC chambers and about 10.8:1 - 11:1 compression. Not sure if I should buy the assembled milled heads or start with the ported bare heads and have them milled .030 ???

Vince-

I think the 110 LSA would be too rough.. and the stock Z06 cam w/ 117 LSA too mild. Will have to find something in the middle... Maybe a TR 220 114 LSA cam wouldn't be too bad with the Ls6 heads?

I would get the fully assembled SDPC heads if you are going that route. They are ready to bolt in. Get the right pushrods, measure preload and you are all set. As for cam choice I think a TR 224 would work great, still pass emissions and work with those springs. You are leaving a little power on the table with the TR220 IMO.
Cheers,
Chris

LS6 CNC ported heads 2.00/1.55 from SDPC // Stage II LS1 heads 2.02/1.57 from MTI or GTP

Hi

about the heads , you must find some bodies tried the heads you choice it .

My advice. you will be find in the MTI and GTP the best ported and CFM with LS1 or LS6 , maybe the MTI is busy in this time but you can go with GTP

About the cam , if you M6 go with 112 or less but with 112 is better for the daily drive , is rough but not too much
if you have A4 go with 114

About your cam is too small ....why ??

Thanks.

Fahad..

SDPC told me the fully assembled ported and milled heads have about 11.2:1 compression... and they weren't sure 93 octane was quite enough. If I get the ported bare heads and have them mill .030 over, they will yield 10.3:1 compression. I think that is the way I am going to go with it. Getting the pricing now... That sounds reasonable, I think?

Just ordered the LS6 CNC ported bare heads. SDPC will mill them .030 and assemble with Manley valves and Manley springs w/titanium retainers. Compression will be 10.3:1 and it was a very nice deal for fully assembled LS6 heads If anyone wants more detail...drop me a line.

Thanks for your help guys...now on to the cam selection....

What do I think? I think everybody posts the exact same numbers but not everybodies heads make the exact same power. The numbers dont tell you how those heads compare to anybody elses. It just tells you the head is about as good as others assuming their bench isnt TOO far off.

I also think the TEA Stage 2 5.3 heads will put down better number track and dyno than the SDPC heads will and be very competive with MTI or GTP powerwise. In cost per hp the TEA's are going to be very very hard to beat.

The TEA Stage 2 5.3's have a proven track record and if you get in on a GP the price is better than the LS6 heads for similar results. To my knowledge the TEA's have show as much as 440rwhp in Verbs car. I suggest you contact TEA and talk with Brian Tooley before making your final decision.

Best wishes on your H&C package.
