Han Solo: "Where'd you dig up that old fossil?"
Luke: "In the overly ambitious RWHP thread!"

No, Luke replied with "Ben is a great man." Google is your friend.

Several things IMO:

1) Cam streetability or driveability is in the tune. A 22x, 23x, and even 24x duration cams can be tamed. I've got a healthy one in my Z (T56) and can cruise around the parking garage on MSU's campus in 1st gear at 1600 rpm just fine.

2) Supporting mods are nothing to ignore. Headers, pushrods, injectors, torque converter....all of these things need to be considered based on cam selection. If you're shooting for 400 on an otherwise stock long block, the right selection of parts is necessary to get you there with good driveability.

3) HP isn't everything. Look at power under the curve and torque production! A cam that has a higher peak horsepower, but lower average HP/torque production under the curve only serves as a bragging figure when you're spouting off numbers. It'd be different if the engine shot up to 6600 RPM and stayed there the entire time you were WOT. But, it doesn't.

4) God damn is this an old thread...

This thread is so old. We started a cam-only thread in the dyno section in 2004. There are now hundreds of cam-only LS1s that make over 400rwhp with the new lobe technology and better tuning.

No need to keep this ancient thread open.
