Performance difference between AFR 205s versu LS6 ported heads (TSP, Patriot, etc)
I am debating the value of 205s vs LS6 ported heads. Any idea about the expected performance difference? Assume a relatively mild cam, say 220s with an lsa of 114 or 115 (haven't decided cam yet). I have done a search and haven't found much info. Any real dyno results would be great. Car is a 01 vette.

I could only guess, but i would not expect much difference in the HP department. The smaller runner of the AFR may make for some crispier throttle response but I thank that would be about it. The main advantage is you would have a more durable piece, with thicker decks and slightly better p/v clearance which would not concern you with that type of camshaft.

I would guess you might get 10 hp more with the afr heads...if the ls6 heads are done well it will probably be a push. Assuming the same port matching, valve springs, and combustion chamber volume.

AFR are better, for the reasons stated.
Last time this came up I got flamed by all the TSP homers. I'm sure they'll be here shortly...

although I'm a big fan of the afr heads....as the car gets older I'm leaning towards the value priced tsp cnc'd heads..
If I were looking for the best ? I'd say afr but if I was looking at a balanced approach I'm leaning towards the less expensive yet impressive tsp heads.
Just my personal opinion as a 1000 dollars goes a long way ...for a new clutch.

Which one is optimal and which one is the more economical buy are two different things. The high velocity 205s can make killer power, but are out of the average guy's price range. That's why the CNC LS6 heads are so popular.

It isn't always a question of what you can afford..but rather which makes more sense for the guy NOT looking for the BEST but rather better.
To the gentleman considering what to do...? I'd suggest also waiting for the recently rumored L92 small bore heads when they release...unless you need to decide faster for some reason...
As I look over your specs...I see top shelf equipment on your car...maybe worth going with the AFR Heads after reviewing the choices....
Me? I'm still working on getting the clutch pedal issue resolved completely so no more money into going fast till that clutch pedal isssue gets resolved..
I'm looking at a possible 4th clutch setup installation in 55K miles(not for the clutch but rather a sticking clutch pedal BS) and this time I'm thinking of going textrilla as it seems to resolve the sticking pedal from early reports. I'm holding off as long as I can so I don't spend 10% of the value of the vehicle on yet another short term (5K mile) solution. so with that said...
If I were going to do heads I would do the tsp heads as I don't believe my 224/224 114 baby cam would maximize the afr heads value..(emission friendly cam though and at the time that was how NJ tested )
With the LG G3x5 cam it might be otherwise. I might consider the best which seem to be the AFR's ...I think guys were running 450rwhp sometimes with the LG cam and the AFR heads...(so it might be worth it) Check with lou.
For the gentleman deciding on cams? the 220's a light cam and I'm not sure I'd go that route....but if I did then TSP cnc'd ls6 heads should be a better route..? I'd definitely go dual valve springs without a doubt.. (valve springs are the weak link in any lsx engine. 220's a light cam though so think long and hard at what your choosing as far as cams...
You might want to choose the AFR heads and the Tony Mamo choice of cams with that setup...I believe its the 224/228 114lsa cam he ran with the AFR heads...Its the way I would go if I were starting over and money wasn't really an object. Tony hit some crazy numbers with that combo but I wouldn't do the fast intake for its expense. JMO
Just food for thought..

A friend of mine got prc heads. He is very happy with them. He love them on his car. I got AFRs. They looked better. To me the more money was a good investment. PRC are great value for the money. AFR are very well done.

With the addition of the Fast 90/90 my car now makes 450rwhp....
As you can see Id recommend the PRC LS6 heads with the PRC gold dual springs package. GREAT VALUE!
If you want the ABSOLUTE BEST go with the Trickflows.....

I'm not sure, but I seem to be having pretty good results with LS6 heads.
10.41 @ 131.48 with LS6 heads on a 3300lbs street driven 6spd is not bad.
If I had to do it agian I would get LS6 heads again and not think twice. I would like to see that those TFS heads can do though. I personaly have not been impressed by AFR's in N/A aplications.
