Cali guys please help...
Im trying to decide what to do with the Z and cant make up my mind, what type of N/A set up do you guys run? my perfect set up would be for a 400-450whp, reliable and fairly (+or- 20mpg) gas friendly DD that can pass smog. can I do this with a simple head and cam package? If so who's? If someone can give me a no-**** this works in my car it would be awesome.

TR 224 on a 114 LSA with Livernois LS6 heads is a combo i've seen work very well and make around 420ish rwhp with a tune and is very streetable. You'll need supporting mods (springs, retainers, pushrods, etc) along with a good tune and it's a good idea to replace your oil pump (with a ported and shimmed pump like the one from TR) and your timing chain (with an LS2 set) while you have everything apart. Make sure you get the gaskets you need and any loose ends. THere are some pretty good guides around here if you search around. Just make sure you have some decent high-flow cats on your exhaust and you should be good to go.
What supporting mods do you have so far? LTs? Lid? anything? If not, the CheaTR package from Thunder Racing is a better deal for you since it's made to work with stock manifolds/cats and provide near 400 rwhp but the afformentioned setup with longtubes (not legal, but can pass smog if visual is exempted by a 'nice' smog guy) will make more power/tq.

+1. Depending on the tune there have been cars with CheaTR and AFR 205cc (i think) heads that put down aound 390rwhp on stock manifolds.
Im putting down 340rwhp with my 98 TA through the stock (shitty) manifolds, lid, LS6 maf, FTRA, pulley, and a non-adjustable Borla cat-back. Those ore my only mods. With my 3.73s i average 20-22mpg with equal street/hwy driving. This car is my DD.

TR224/224/114 LSA and ported LS6 or AFR205 would work but I think you'll need LT headers to pull the power your looking for out of that setup.
BTW I have TR224, AFR 205's and QTP long tubes and am making 421 RWHP and 403 TQ (Corrected)on all motor.

I have guys making that much with our stage 1 heads and smaller cams than we normally suggest... Our stage 2 heads and stage 1 cam generally make 420ish on our dyno seems to be lower than most. We had a customer in with someone else's stage 2 heads and a 224 cam and only make 390rwhp.

If you are going to pass Cali smog (legally), you'll need to run cats in the stock locations which takes LT's out of the equasion. You might want to set a more realistic goal of around 380-400 rwhp N/A... then spray it with a small shot to run with the guys who get their certificate by other means.

What type of cam should I be looking for if I was running mid or shorty headers, not stock. I dont want to have to worry about the visual inspection so ill probably go mid length headers with 2.5 catted y-pipe and cat back(to be determined). I saw a package from TSP that was just that. so what cam with those and 205's? Also what else exactly..."You'll need supporting mods (springs, retainers, pushrods, etc) along with a good tune and it's a good idea to replace your oil pump (with a ported and shimmed pump like the one from TR) and your timing chain (with an LS2 set) while you have everything apart." is that it? any other reccomendations?
