Default Worst Heads

Had a Buddy

He had a set of NOT 853 Heads (THEY ARE PORTED 243 HEADS) that made some pretty bad power. These where supposed to be Ported & all Hogged out. Also to boot he did the FAST 90/90 with Kooks Longtubes & 3 1/2 X-Pipe & did 370 RWHP through a A4

He had 241's on his old setup & made alot more power with those & had a LS6Intake & Ported Stock TB & they made 388 RWHP tuned.

Are 853 that bad?

241 and 853 are the same as far as I know.
The 241 are lost wax cast or something while the 853 are sand cast. Same port profiles etc.
Its just the 853 may be a bit rougher without a cleanup. But potential should be much the same.

its all on how they are "ported", where they done by a reputable company or some clown trying to make money by molesting a set of heads and selling them as the best thing on earth...I personally have a set of cnc 853's that flow about 10cfm more then a stock ls6 head, the intake valves are too big, my car made 388/367 only 25hp more then my buddys as cast ls6 head and 02+ ls6 cam ss, he has no other mods...my heads are about 5 years old well before any aftermarket casting was available, my suggestion is buy a set of afr or tf he wont be disappointed

He had a MS3 cam on the old setup with the 241s Made 388 RWHP

He has a Vinticator 240-244 609 - 596 112 lobe sep cam on the new setup with FAST90/90 & new short block too. Made 370 RWHP

I would think he would at least be at 420 RWHP with the (NOT Ported 853's) THEY ARE PORTED 243 HEADS & FAST 90/90 & Vinticator Cam

I just don't understand why it made almost 20 RWHP less

They where ported by Rep porter at LME. But they had been through another porter & these where pretty HOGGED OUT. Seems like to much material was taken out maybe.

Just from what you are describing to me. I would say fouled plugs as well. If the motor cranked over. Then its not gettting spark now.

He is gonna run my 241s & hope we can break 400 RWHP.

Did your car sounds pretty nasty with the T-Rex?

Was that a Mustang dyno?

370rwhp with 240/244 cam and fast 90/90 is way low. Maybe his motor is fubar

Its a Brand New Short Block. How would you check to see if the motor is bad besides pressure checking each Cycl?

I hope that is not the case. But 370 RWHP is extremelly low I thought too & that was 5500 RPM & still had another 1000 RPM to go. They tuned teh car for spray. But I couldn't see anohter 1000 RPM & adding timing back in would bring the car near 420 RWHP by any means

That cam won't make peak power until 6400rpm or so. Did he have the 853's flowed? Does he know what cc they are? Maybe he has very low compression with the new short and heads. There are just to many variables.

Still that combo should hit above 400 whp even on a Mustang. BTW that cam should peak much later than 5500 how did he ascertain peak HP at 5500? With 90/90 that cam will peak in the 6300>6500 region.

No Flow numbers on the heads. They are going to put the 241s on & see if we can find the power again.

They are at 62cc on the NOT 853 Heads (THEY ARE PORTED 243 HEADS). But can a set of heads really cause a loss of almost 50 RWHP.

The car made 388 RWHP on the 241s & with the Addition of the FAST90/90 & cam the car should be a easy 420 RWHP with a good set of heads I thought

Well the springs could be to weak, the valve guides could be worn causing blow by, or if just over hogged have no air spead and poor flow numbers.
