Default valve job, timing chain, oil pump questions

My LS1 in the 04 GTO has 19500 miles on it. I was going to do a cam swap & get the stock 241 heads ported as well. My question is with such low miles do I need to replace the timing chain? What about the oil pump even though it has the LS6 style? Also, should I get a valve job done too? Really don't want to spend the extra $250 but if I should then I will. I will reuse the lifters, pushrods, & rockers. Thanks!

I think I would at least consider replacing the pushrods since you're already there, it's not big money, and they are kind of a weak point in the LSXs.

The oil pump, timing chain, and lifters absolutely don't need to be replaced. Howevr PR's and springs and retainers should be. TSP sells an excellent dual spring, titanim retainer set for <$300. It's not clear what you want to accomplish with your heads, but there are better choices, 243's for instance, very moderately priced.

i would save the $$ on the heads and just go with a cam and then later on get some real good heads.

with only 20k miles i thinkg your oil pump and chail would be fine. but a spring kit and pushrods are a no brainer.

Thanks guys. I was going to get springs (PP Gold ~$250) already but forgot to mention that. I wasn't planning on pushrods though but everyone has recommended it, so for ~$110 why not.
I thought about saving up for some aftermarket heads but have decided to just get the stock ones ported & spend the money on other mods (ported TB, headers, dual exhaust, etc.)

Since your in there already, I would. Depends on your cash.

You could get a double-roller for 99 bux
or an LS2 Chain for 35 bux

You could get a high-volume Melling Oil Pump for 129
or you could port your LS6 Pump

Good luck

Ive seen a car break a timing chain with a little over 50k miles on it. It had a Futral F13 cam only, I would get a new chain I know you got low miles but it would be better to spend a little on a chain now instead of a chain ,valves and possibly pistons if the chain does break.

Get a valve job for sure if you're gonna get em ported. Make sure the machinist/head porter is competent enough to realize the necessary measurements with a non adjustable valvetrain. He'll need to make sure the stem protrusion is within acceptable limits.

Hmm..... Now you all have me thinking more & more.... With the addition of the valve job + the pushrods, that $1400 package from Patriot Performance seems like the the way to go. Besides, that was one of the 3 cams I was considering anyway:

Thunder Racing TR224 224/224 .563/.563 114
Patriot Performance 225/229 .580"/.590" 114
Texas Speed Torquer v.2 232/234 .595/.598 114

LS2 chains are ~$40 IIRC so looks like I'll be throwing that in there as well.

We found the 04 Vette we just put a cam in already had the LS2 chain. You could wait and measure the thickness to confirm. If you have it already, you don't need to remove the oil pump at all and run the risk of a pinched o-ring. The chain can be gotten fairly quick if you do need it.

That's cool.
What size thickness should it be?
