Will I know you can buy the tools from thunder racing to slide in, or use magnets. Instead of buying the thunder racing tool can you just slide in a metal rod or something to hold the lifters up?

Yes you can. I used wood dowls. There has been alot of discussion about this over the years. A search could turn up alot of info. If I remember correctly I used 5/16". You can also use metal rods, just shave them down on one side.

I used dowels a couple of times. Be gentle and you won't break one.

me too, except i had small round magnets affixed to the end of new pencils...worked like a charm. the slickest part about it is the clothes pins, they fit from the edge of the head to the valvespring so well..lol.

Damn, those pen magnets arent cheap, I'd be all over the dowels if I had to do it again. I just pulled mine out, I had my heads off.

I just finished mine about 4 days ago. Use the 5/16 metal rods at about $3.00 each. I cut mine to about 22" and the passenger side I ground off about 5/32 the lenghth of the rod the both slipped right in. Oil them for sure. Do not risk wood in your engine. Pen magnets at $5.00 each is not cheap and I have heard of more than one issue with the magnet getting stuck or coming off. I also did TDC for the springs as well as pressurized the cylandar. No such thing as overkill when it comes to safty.

I was the lucky one whom had the magnet tip get cought on the lifter and pop off! Talk about a "O ****!" feeling. Luckly at the time I worked for a Medical Engineering Company and took a Spinal Implanting tool to get it off the top of the lifter. I'd go dowl!

Use the steel dowels. I wouldn't use wood. Seems like to me the wood would leave debris in the motor. The passenger side needs a little bit shaved or ground off. The ground part will go up and towards the middle of the motor.
