Do I need a new oil pump passed 430 rwhp?
I am getting a new set-up soon, and was wondering if a new oil pump is needed/worth getting? If so... which one do you guys suggest? I hear the modified LS6 piece from Thunder is pretty good... any others.
I was talking with one of the most respected people when it comes to heads... and our engines, and he told me that he does not think that there is any oil pump on the market that flows that much more volume to justify the expense. If there is not... is there any other reason to buy one?
Thanks in advance!!

I just put in a TR modified LS6 pump and it works great, has higher oil presure . . . but in an '01 I think you already have an LS6 pump. My new pump looks just like the old one. It's probably not worth spending the money unless you just like having the best. The reason I replaced mine was for reliability: the presure relief valve can stick open on some of the stock pumps causing a big loss of oil presure; almost zero at idle.

Is that something that you would notice... or that I would have noticed already if it was going to do it?
Is that oil gauge accurate on our cars?
Thanks for the reply!!

I just got the ported LS6 pump from A.R.E because they are on special for $139. I couldn't pass up the deal. They port the passages, clean up the casting flash and shim the relief spring for higher pressure. I wasn't going to put all of this time and money in my motor without spending a few bucks on the security of a new pump.

Any volume increase at all will be a benefit, since these engines have issue's with top end oiling anyway. Depending on what your engine is revved to will make a difference too. If you are revving over 6500/6600 I would say it would be a great investment. I bought mine from ARE. Another trick is to run the oil on the dipstick just a shade over full!

I don't think there is a difference. They both do the same mods to the pump. As long as you buy one from a reputable company that knows what they are doing, you'll be fine.
