Default pics of my stock pistons/valves.. good? bad?

well guys i bought this motor from a wrecked Z28, ive have broken down the motor and have the heads off so far, the pushrods, springs, etc looked in good shape, once i enter into the piston area, im a noob. just wanted to get some advive on the conditions of these:

sorry these were taken with my camera phone, i tried to take pics of the good valves and the bad ones. same with the heads.

Also what could i do for cleaning the top of the pistons?

I know how you feel ive been in the same position. For cleaning the valves i wold use purple power engine degreaser. That stuff is amazing sometimes. For the pistons i wouldnt try to clean them unless you take them out to just avoid letting cleaner leaking down into yor block and mixing with the oil could result in some bad news. Just maybe wet some paper towels with the purple power and wipe the pistons with them if you have toclean the pistons.

Everything appears to be good with exception to a little excessive carbon buildup. I would put it back together and run a good top end cleaner through it when you get it running

You could also use some carb cleaner and scotchbrite to clean the crap off the piston and the deck in prep for new head gaskets.

Hey i am only 18 and last year when i was 17 i did a heads/cam swap by myself in 2 days.Everything went to plan and started right up with no hesitation. So i think a lot of people can do things but are afraid to.

Yea that is true,i thought of myself as a noob since i never really did any major motor work.all i did was ehxuast and stuff like that.

But back on topic they look like my heads and pistons did when i tore it apart. You should be okay to go.

I'll give him point for not being afraid to try. WD40 and a scotchbright pad will clean the tops of the piston. How do the cylinder walls look? Any rust on them anywhere?

Clean the pistons, send the heads for a clean job and inspection (valve guides etc...) a new valve job and new springs/seals and you are good to go.
Change your oil before firing it up.

Just looks like a little carbon buildup, nothing serious. Like others have said, top engine cleaner (seafoam treatment) should do the trick after everything is put back together.

PS, don't have to be "experienced" to tear down a motor. I did my first H/C swap a few months ago with the help of a mechanic (he did most of the work)... but what it all comes down to is a bunch of nuts and bolts.

ok guys look at my join date! I have had an fbody for 3 years..pulled a motor. tranny. and rearend...I'm a noob on anything deeper than the heads..aka. pistons, rods, crank. and blah blah blah about me having a v6...that motor taught me a lot...and has allowed me to this point. I just wanted other opinions...this is a used motor, I thought it was excess buildup. just wanted other opinions. hell I've never put a cam in...but that's next week

x2 I mean give the guy some credit, it took me awhile to build confidence when i was 19 to do head gasket and cam swap on my 30th Anv Z28. Good stuff man and I'd do as others have said get the heads cleaned up, new seals, springs etc. Don't do like i did though and just gett'em cleaned up and checked. Have them ported while they're off, that way if you put a cam in down the road you won't have left that much on the table.
