Default cam only VS cam and heads

hopefully this doesnt sound stupid but it caught my attention....what are the odds that an ls1 with a big cam like a trex or vindicator or ms4, 373's, pt4400, full exhaust and intake could take on another ls1 with a mild head and cam setup...cam around 224/224, full exhaust, 3.42's, and a 3200 stall? i guess to dumb the question down...can a big cam with the appropriate parts take on a mild head cam setup?

you're stacking the deck in favor of the cam only setup.

it all depends on the set up. if a trex car with everything set up correctly can go 10.4 or faster than it is going to beat a small cam and head. however if you are talking about a trick flow head and 224 car set up correctly, you got a good race. i have seen 450 horsepower cars get beat by a 390 horsepower car because of chassi setup and weight. either way modding a ls1,2,3,6,7,x results in high adrenaline and way to much fun.

to just go out on a limb i would say the small cam with heads stated above could probably beat a big cam car.

i have a trex car and wish i had bigger heads and maybe a smaller cam but look at top fuel, that car is badass with cam and heads.

What are you talking about at the track?
Maby? maby not haha. yeah kinda a stupid question because I've see many small camed cars smoke large camed cars ( at the track), just depends on alot of things tune driver.
But lets just say the both had a perfect tune and driver then the cam and heads car should do better than just the camed car.
What good is a big cam if you are not getting the air in and out threw a good head.

But its all just BS untill you take it to the track and let us know.

haha yea maybe i shouldnt have asked such an akward question, but i was just curious...reason being is a buddy of mine has a setup similar to the head and cam scenario...im planning on puttingin an ms4, 373s and a pt4400 and i was wondering how close of a race it would be, at the track that is. I know putting heads in is the best idea but i dont want to go to far in modding her because she is an LE so i just want to give her a lil more punch, thats all

It can be possible, but I'd rather go with a big cam and ported heads jaja

if you are putting a ms4 in a LE you might as well put some 5.3 or 243 at the min.

You could do a cam only vs cam/heads and get the same (peak) hp numbers, but the heads/cam combo will have better driveability.

The heads/cam car should make broader power, but peak lower. Anything other than running flat out above 6000rpm and the h/c car should get it done and has the capability of being more streetable. AutoX, road race, street encounters stuff like that will benefit the h/c combo.

I have seen small cams put down great numbers even in cam only cars and big cam cars put down low numbers. Its all what you want and the HP and TQ is all in the details and tune.

Also numbers arent everything...a bad driver in a big cam car versus a good driver in a small cam car will loose.
