Threw a rod bearing, what are my options?
Im pretty sure i spun a rod bearing, it still drives just getting extremely loud, its holding oil pressure at about 40 psi, i dont want to lock up the motor, i have another car to drive.
Basically i need to know what kind of options will be my best cost effective bet on wat to do. Any suggestions, i appreciate your guys help.

its part of normal wear and tear, some motors will last longer than others unless youre really low mileage than theres really no explanation as to why it happened. i too spun a rod bearing and i just bought another stock crank and then went with probe forged pistons, perfect circle piston rings, custom comp cam, clevite bearings, arp rod, main and head bolts and other stuff such as gasket and what not. anyways all in all i paid 1700 in parts for the rotating assembly and valvetrain. although it did cost a hell of alot more with all the machining and blue printing and balancing all in all i have a pretty reliable motor and only cost about 5,000 with all assembly. the only thing i had to do is drop it back in.

Figure out whats wrong first. Thats the first thing.
Now as far as whats the best bang for the buck that will be argued. You ca have the current sb rebuilt and put some forged stuff in and be around 3k I guess, maybe little more or less depending on what you do.
My 408 short block is $4292 plus freight. Its built with Callies and Wiseco and ARP and ACL race bearings, Clevite or hell fire rings. Damn solid setup. You need to ship your engine if you dont find someone local so dont forget to add that price. Or you can find a 347 from another sponsor for less than I sell 408's for. I even sell a less expensive version for $4042 with a Scat crank.
Just something to think about.

This infamous scene comes to mind after reading this thread...: "Oh ****...What the F**k was that?!?"..."Its the motor...shes thrown a rod"..."Is that serious?"...."Yap"....--Jake and Elwood Blues-The Blues Brothers

I think TSP has a forged 346 SB for under $3K.

i'd guess for less than $700 you could pull the motor, have the crank turned, install new bearings, rod bolts, and necessary gaskets/liquids and be on your way. just one thing - make sure you didn't circulate any bearing trash (check cam bearings, etc for wear) and get any additional metal out of the engine before reassembly and eventual starting.

Because after you've wasted 3 or 4 grand and had it not work or blow up again you have to spend even more money to do what you should have done in the first place. Have it built by someone who knows what they're doing.
These aren't legos they dont just snap together. I had a shop teacher tell me once he could rebuild and engine with some vise grips and a screw driver but he wouldnt want it.

how much are new bearings? got a crank turned and polished for $80 last year. rod bolts - $225? last i checked, my labor is free.

what's your problem dude? these engines are no different than any other engine. anyone with the will can read a book, take their time, and rebuild an ls1 engine. believe it or not, gm does carry books with specs and parts stores do carry plastigage...as well as torque wrenches. everyone acts like an ls1 is a spaceship engine never before seen by man. what gives? i don't understand why 80% of the people on here like to turn a $700 fix into $3,200. yall must enjoy debt or something? i think it's hilarious. so when your boy breaks a front window on your house you are going to add a level and underground parking? must be the american way.

I guess this person didnt read that how to be an expert book that you read.
If you think all it takes is a set of tools and a manual then go ahead and open your own shop and help the rest of us out

OP: dude, there are a MILLION options you have here. i spun a rod bearing and my car has sat since (~3-4months now). my motor locked up completely. i parted out everything under the hood to help fund the new motor. my crank was NOT salvagable, nor was 1 rod. the rest was good. now i have a LSX block soon to be built pending the sale of my S10 and my dirtbike.
you can look at it one of two ways:
"DAMN, my motor's broke!"
or
"SWEET! I'M GETTING A BETTER ENGINE!"
do what you want with what YOUR budget will allow. debt sucks, but we all have it, just don't go stupid with it. if you have something else to drive and want to go faster, let it sit and piece together something you'll be happy with.
