i have never heard of that technical term "gunk" but if you have "gunk" obviously you need use "gunk remover"

randy from doug rippie (drm) says they use something similar to a non soapy nylon type of brillo pad that is approved by the fda for cleaning the tops of pistons. you may want to give him a call to find out where you can pick one up

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration for cleaning pistons? You can scrape the bulk of it off with a gasket scraper then clean with some carb cleaner and a towel.

I've cleaned them up with the soft-fiber pads on an air grinder. It cleans them good and doesn't scar the piston.

In the future, spray alot of nitrous and you won't have any gunk!

Interesting that you only had carbon on #1, I had it on all of them. Maybe you had a bad seal on the valve(s) for #1.

Gasket remover works WONDERS on carbon build up. Spray it on and let it sit for about 5 minutes and it will just wipe off. Spray the cylinder with WD40 after you're done.

Are you talking about the one where someone could key your piston and it will still take the scratch out? I heard hot dipping in oxyclean makes cast alum look like day one.

How is everyone missing the point of this thread? Guy here wants to know why only 1 is carbon'd up, not how to clean just 1!

As said above, likely bad seal.
