First reply in a while....

Research is key if you have a budget. Look at searching first and pick up some good ideas from the millions of other that have been there.

If you have some cash just order Trick Flows H/C 505hp package, LT (long tubes) headers, full cat-back, and intake is a start. I don't know where you are from so tuning is up in the air. Again look at the sponsor list for a shop in your area and take a road trip to see them.

How do you want your power, NA, juiced, blow, stuffed? Save up for the tranny soon after you figure out how you want to get to 500.

500rwhp is a goal that isn't really easy to acheive. A lot of the supposed 500rwhp cars online get their from dyno tricks & tons of compression. We did dyno testing of different cylinder heads & camshafts side by side in the search for power across the board. Tell us about your vehicle & we can discuss a package that will work for you. I've made nearly 600 flywheel horsepower on the engine dyno with a stock bottom end. 500rwhp is possible, but to get that power honestly you'll have compromies...

It can be done, but it isn't inexpensive. The heads and cam choice are only part of the equation. The exhaust is very important. There are some TFS threads with people going over 500 rwhp as well as PatrickG doing it with some massaged 205's. BUT it's not cheap.
IMO better money spent would be on a 408 to acheive it a lot easier and have more power in a useable range. 500rwhp with a 346 vs 500 rwhp with a 408 is night and day to drive.

I want to stay all motor and around 5 grand is alright for me to spend.the 408 was really high up on my list for choices so i might stick with that. I also saw the trickflow packages so i have some thinking to do.I have a couple performance tuning shops around here so tuning shouldnt be a big problem.reliability is a big factor, and i realize that power costs money,so compromise is ok with me.Gas here is freakin $4.20 a gallon here so this should be interesting.eventually soon itll be a weekend pounder not a daily driver so....

Well said.

408 dumdumdum.

Then if you get bored you can throw on a pair of twins, make twice the power..

Trick flow 215's fully worked over, Big cam (MS4 or somthing allong those lines) some nice headers, probably 1-7/8. And a worked over FAST 92/92 setup. Underdrive pulley, Ewp, and some compression should get you there. Oh and if you plan on goin with a 12 bolt or have a big verter or big gears, it only robs your RWHP on the dyno, but will make it go faster (or be more reliable). In reality a fully built drivetrain with a 12 bolt and bigger verter, will rob enough h/p that it might not be able to graze the 500 mark, but on a six speed youd have made it. A dyno is just a tool, if my car made 490 RWHP with that drivetrain setup id be thrilled.

Checkout this thread with our cam only dyno testing. We have several different 500hp sheets.

To get 500 in an A4 you will need big cubes or a small power adder. For a more realistic goal on an A4 with 346 cubes I would shoot for 450 rwhp.

Good post.

Also, you can call cartek, a sponsor on this site, they have 500+ rwhp stock cube cars running the number at the track. No matter where you decide to buy from, make sure you ask what times the customers with these packages are running. Gaining 30rwhp on a dyno just takes a few tricks.
