Gasket remover works like a champ to get the carbon off.

I brought each cylinder up to the top and used a gasket scraper. It's carbon buildup.

Just curious, why do you guys do this?

Seems like a waste of time to me. The carbon will be right back after the first time it fires so whats the point?

I figure the more carbon buildup the higher your compression ratio and more power!! ha just kidding.. i never do it

I always clean the carbon off. I used a scrapper and cleaner. Just make sure you get all the gasket stuff out of the holes and cylinders.

Brake cleaner is flammable as a ****, if any of that seeps past your rings you could have some fireworks coming out of your bottom end on the inital start up.

I brought each cylinder up to TDC and used a razor blade to get all the carbon off.

How do you measure PTV with carbon on the piston? Most don't measure is likely the answer.

Carbon in the combustion chamber causes detonation. The carbon retains the heat (actually glows) after the charge has been exhausted and greets the incoming charge.

My advice about cleaning the tops; don't use any liquid. It will carry the tiny granules into the ring area. where you won't be able to get it out aside from disassembly.

I first moved the piston down in the bore a few inches and put a very light coating of oil around the cylinder with my finger. The piston was then moved to TDC where it actually protrudes above the deck a tiny amount. I masked all the holes with towels and tape and proceeded to used a small putty knife where I had carefully removed all sharp corners. I had a shop vac on hand and running to suck up the particles as they became dislodged.

Sprayed some carb cleaner onto a rag then used elbow grease, worked 100% perfect.

I just scrap with a good flat gasket scraper. By sure not to gouge the aluminum of the piston tops. I then blow that cylinder out with compressed air after covering all the other cylinders. The carbon takes a while to build up; I think it's a good idea to remove every time you have access to the pistons.
