LY6 with T56
LY6 mated to a T56 out of a 2005 GTO with an LS7 clutch setup
I just finished installing my clutch behind the LY6 and mounted up the bellhousing. When I tried to install the LY6 starter, it wouldn't fit. If I pull the bellhousing off, the starter will mate up fine and work with my LS7 flywheel.
But the area where the bellhousing bumps out to allow the starter in is about a half inch too high.
So did anyone shave the bellhousing or use a different starter?
Thanks guys
Jim
All I know is that the LY6 starter will not work with a 2005 GTO bellhousing. the starter is about a 1/2" too low from the bump on the bellhousing
Has anyone shaved the bellhousing to get the clearance? I'd prefer not to drop another $200 for a GTO starter if I can just spend some time grinding down the bellhousing.

I have an LM7 and a T56 (TUET2066) from an 04' GTO.
I bought a Powermaster 9201 (All LS models)
I bought an Exedy/LUK flywheel/clutch combo.
Bolted up the flywheel to the crank and the starter up to the block and it looks (haven't popped the starter plunger out to see if it engages) but it eyeballs right up.
Tried to bolt up the bell housing up and the lower starter shroud hits the lower starter hump on the bell.
I would rather NOT get another starter (GTO) because the damn Powermaster is brand new and I don't wanna dick with it. lol.
Can the starter shroud be taken down till it fits in the bell hump? The Powermaster has these "fins" cast into the starter shroud but if you look at the GTO and other models, theyre smooth. I would bet that if it were smooth, it would fit. Its really close to fitting.....around 3/16-1/4" or so.
Here is the PDF from Powermaster. Note the line for the Chevy/Pontiac LS engines and the line below that noting for 4.8/5.3/6.0 trucks. Both note as taking the 9201 which obviously is not correct.
Also here is a thread from 2008 noting the main external difference between the T56 bells for the GTO and the F-body bells is the GTO bell uses a smaller starter opening for a Mitsubishi starter and the F-body starters do not fit.
I work just down the road from Powermaster so I will call them tomorrow and raise the question and will report back what I find out. If I have stumbled upon this and so did the OP, I am sure there are many more out there on the interwebs that also have fallen upon this same issue.
I am hoping they reply "ohhh well yeahhh. on the GTO's you have to knock down the outside of the starter shroud with a carbide burr and itll plug right in there"

He also said its OK to take down the starter shroud (cone) to the first step (take off the fins) in strategic areas to get it to fit. Said not to take it down TOO MUCH though and not to go past the depth of the first fin. If more needs to come off, take it off the bell housing starter bump.
