I have been trying to get hi flo cats put on but no shop around here will do it. Also I dont know the name of my headers as they were on the car when I bought it.
I have one of these on my car (MagnaFlow 12219 oval muffler) duel/duel out and it is loud . So.. would two of these in the back be quiter or louder than my one?
1) If you're running High Flow cats with the hopes of a quieter ride - don't.
2) If you want to run high flow cats with the hopes of passing inspection - Yes of course.
If #1, then:
Vibrant Performance Resonators (The best volume reducers) I'd say you're about 30% less volume by adding just one. They mean business.
are you saying to put two of these at the rear and no muffler, too wide for under the car
Hey Bluebird,
Trying to understand your situation.
Are you trying to reduce volume? If so, what I'm saying is - the bottle style Resonators from Vibrant are simply your *best* bet. You'd have to cut out a piece of your exhaust, and weld the resonators in. If you are limited on space and only have space to weld one in, it is well-worth the effort.
Don't remove your current muffler or whatever you're using, just add the resonator in the piping some where. Cut and replace regular piping with the resonator.
thanks, I have duel over the axle into a duel in duel out magnaflow 14" size and am at 95 db idling inside of the car. I am not sure of i can fit these on the pipes from the muffler back to the tips unless i go with shorter ones or remove my duel in/out completely and use just these in the back.
But yes, I am trying to reduce the noise. here are some photos if it helps
*KEEP* your current muffler. Just add the resonator(s) where you can:
Let me know if this makes sense:
You can literally cut out any of those areas marked in red, and weld in the resonators. Find piping straight for 12" or so where you can weld in resonators. They sell 12" versions and 18" versions. 12" are easier to fit. Also, you can make them 10" if you are willing to cut the leaders on both ends a bit.
Any questions? Make sure you are looking at the bottle style 12" Resonators, 3" OD/ID (or whatever your diameter is) - the reason I recommend Vibrant is because for the price they ask, you simply can't beat their quality, and the amount of volume they reduce. I am currently running one on my 427. Helps with drone, but really eliminates volume and cleans up the sound.
Edit:
And no, they don't really affect flow, there will be no difference in power that you could possibly feel by welding some in.
You only need 1 to make a difference. 1 & 4 are your best bet for straight piping.
2 and 3 - only space to weld one side, won't accommodate two side by side.
thanks for the suggestion, i can try this out. My pipes under are not exactly straight though but maybe they can be altered some. #4 is in front of the x-pipe . here are some other shots
The rear one will be your *easiest* - but will have a lesser affect. Remember, the closer your can get the resonators to the engine, the more affect they'll have. However, the rear location will still be noticeable. But if you can squeeze one in on the passenger side red circle, one should do the trick. I actually have mine welded in to the rear (bottom picture red circle) and it made a difference.. well, just enough for me to be less annoyed by my own exhaust.
I think I have 2.5" pipes after the x-pipe, does that mean I need a 2.5'' inlet/outlet resonators. The 12'' long ones are 3 in and out. I am not sure I have 18'' of space there for the 2.5 in/out ones
And remember, you can cut the leaders on these to give you about 2" more of clearance (basically shortening the resonator by 2 inches, without affecting its' durability)
No problem. Remember to cut the leaders to help you squeeze these in some where.
And remember, you want to cut these as square as possible (square as in flush) - a grinding wheel to flatten/re-flush your cuts can help you get a better weld.
It's not easy to do at home unless you're used to working with stuff like this, but take your time and it's well worth the effort.
Another tip:
Don't go hacking away at stuff without first "test fitting" them some where with your eye sight. Make sure there is space available in terms of width, not just length.
From Corsa. They took the specs of my engine and recommended a system that goes on certain model C6 corvettes.
I was told by one of their techs that if I threw just a random set of Corsa Mufflers on it would drone; with what he recommended, I have no drone and a completely unique sound.
Ground clearance in the back, under the trunk area, is not very good but acceptable for me to drive daily.
What was the part number? 14164?
It's the 3" system for the Z06... I figure that would work. I could even try to keep the tips, lol.
Back to trying to figure out how to quiet mine down with the new motor going in...
BUT I got tired of how little the ground clearance was so I swapped them for Kooks KO300-12 mufflers.
The Kooks are not too loud at all; they have a deep, bass sound reminiscent of an old school big block.
Ah, those were the ones I was thinking of going with. So those work as well as the Corsas? And fit better?
Only issue is the Dynomax Ultraflos I tried have around 297 in^3 of volume (removing the 3" pipe's volume through the center) and the Kooks 4x8s have 300 in^3 volume of packing. I don't know if it would be much quieter. The UltraFlos are definitely deeper. But still very loud.
