Yes you will need a MSD 6LS-2 ignition controller. Other sensor item's are needed as well, (coil pack, crank sensor, MAP sensor, cam sensor). Step over to the MSD site for more info on this setup. It's a cost effective way to go if your starting from the ground floor, (not an injected car). An electric fuel pump will be needed but is very cost effective as well to retro-fit to your 73.

Will the crank have the 24X or 58X reluctor wheel? If it has the 24, I think you'll have to use the LS1 version of the timing controller.

Yes your right,I have not ordered the motor yet, so I could order either reluctor.
Is there any advantage running the 58x over the 24x other than if I wanted to put this engine in a c6 Zo6?

Great info! I'm doing a similar build and was getting to the point of needing this info as well. Awesome.

I have a 58 tooth wheel on my crank, (Callies Magnum) to use with my 447 carb build. I'm using All Pro heads and may switch over to a LS-7 plastic manifold later on when I go injected. I'm using the MSD 58 tooth box to start out with. I have to do this one step at a time because of the cost. Carbs are the cheapest way to go right now for me.

why not run the GMPP front cover and run a distributor? I'm going to try it this time around...MSD 302 lo-pro billet distributor and a crank trigger. No pcm at all and I can tune the suka in a few minutes rather than pay someone and have to take it somewhere to get tuned.

I don't think you have to take it anywhere to tune it,just plug & play or you can tune it from a pc.

For MSD use the 6010 box with a 24x reluctor and the 6012 box with the 58x reluctor.

I have the 6010 box, the wire harness is pretty nice that they give you. However, on my box the sensor ground was not grounded internally in the box and cost us over 7 hours of work, just to tap the other ground so the box would fire. But other than that bull, it works well. 9.94 on shakedown passes 417ci carb'd.

It is pretty straight forward as long as your boxes electronics werent f'd up like mine. Sorry, still ticked off on that one lol.

It's a very simple plotted chart for timing that you can connect via a laptop with a serial connection or serial-usb adapter.

If you don't want to mess with the timing they include some timing modules.

Can you explain a little more in detail on how you fixed the ground problem?
