Default LS3 or L92....how do I tell?

I'm going to look at an enigne to buy, and it's supposed to be an LS3. But it doesn't have an intake on it. And since the casting numbers are the same between the two, how do I tell which is which? Do the valve springs look different (since they are different)? I'll get it either way...just be nice to know what I'm getting.

L92 will have a different front cover since it has VVT.

Both are aluminum block 6.2L engines.

Forgot about that one...thanks. I'm hoping it will still have the water pump on it...that's a dead give away. Anyone have any pics of the two different front covers?

From LS3/L92 sticky:
Edited July 2007: It is confirmed that the LS3 shares the same cylinder head castings and block casting as the L92 truck engine. The main difference in LS3 complete heads is that they have lighter valves and better valvesprings than standard L92 complete heads.

Stickies are your friend.

Yes, I am well aware of that, they are the same casting, but the casting# is different, someone prove me wrong.
I have 4 LS3s here, all casting# 821. All of the L92s are 823s.....

The actual physical dimensions, port locations, bolts, etc are iden-tical to that of an LS3, but not the casting #.

Are they cast at different foundries? Like the early L92's with 2 different casting numbers? Slightly different material or heat treat?

I've done a little more digging, and Louis is right...at least as far as I've seen. But the timing cover is a dead give away. I lost out on the previously mentioned deal anyway . And it was an L92...for $700!! Warranty job take out, so I didn't know what was wrong with it.

the last 2 sets of heads we purchased from SDPC were numbered 823, right where the typical casting number was like 243, 241, etc...

For what ever reason, I do remember having 4 numbers on the heads I put on my LS2 early last year... looking for pics now if I have any......

It is very possible that production engines have different casting number than the service part heads.

L92 Casting Numbers:
5364
823

LS3 Casting Numbers:
821

(We have not seen an LS3 with a casting number other than 821.)

Hope this helps!
