Before you compress them, or when just slightly compressed, tap the tops of the retainers with a wrench to unseat them, other wise they stick and push the valves down instead of just falling off as you compress the springs

The locks are what need to be tapped, I always smack the **** outta them/the top of the valvestem area before compressing

Is your piston on TDC? That works the best. Plus do like the others have said smack it. I have never had a set drop doing a change like this.

Unless you have so much leakage you can't keep the bore "full" of air to maintain the valves to stay in place.

Also, when you have your engine on TDC take the breaker bar off cuz it will want to rotate the engine and you don't want that thing flying around.

quick question, what are you using to pressurize the cylinder? if you are using an adapter from a compression gauge make sure you take the valve stem out first.

Correct but please use a plastic or rubber coated mallet of some sort I have a soft grip Snap-on wratchet and the rubberized handle works well. Couple taps and they break free
It doesnt take much and your not trying to hammer them.

Put the tool on then add slight tension then tap the top of the retainer gently.

You might also consider having a friend hold the breaker bar on the crank (maybe wedged against something to keep it from turning from TDC) as it is not very fun to pull heads in the tragic event of having a valve inadvertently fall all the way in to the cylinder.
