Default New valvoline motor oil

I was just turning the pages of one of my car parts catalogs that came in the mail [ JC WHITNEY ]. On page 4 there is an add for NEW Valvoline Racing Motor Oil. It states it is NOT a street legal motor oil and it is formulated for racing engine's only . It comes in both regular and synthetic grades.

Regular grade comes in 10W30, 20W50, 50W all weights are $7.99 per QT

Synthetic comes in 5W50, 10W30, 20W50 all weights are $9.99 per QT.

Has anyone heard of this stuff, anyone using it.

It is called VALVOLINE RACINE OIL and NOT STREET LEGAL is printed on each container

I am still using 5W30 and right now there is Castrol Edge in my motor but I was a little curious about this Racing Only oil from Valvoline

Most racing oil are only good for up too 500 miles. I would do some checking before changing to this new oil. If you only plain on running it for a short time i'm sure like all other Valvoline products it's good oil.

Probably not legal due to higher than standard levels of zinc and phosphor (ZDDP) and the damage that does to cats in hi concentrations.

I don't plan on using it. It most likely contains chemicals that would cause a car to fail an emissions test.

CT you're not gonna have to worry about the emmissions failing, you just have a plug in test... as long as you have what "looks" like cats on the car it will pass as long as your computer is setup right.

If this is VR1 oil, it's a pretty good race oil, not something I would use in a street application, mainly because it's not designed to be run for long periods of time.

This oil is not new, it's been around forever. They kept the original formula and called it "not street legal" or whatever when the newer oil ratings came out requiring reduced zddp. It works great for flat tappet camshaft engines that require the high pressure additives to keep from wiping cam lobes. It also has reduced detergents so it's probably not a good idea for a daily driver. In a race car, probably a really good oil...like others said with shorter OCI.

I have ran the VR1 several times....always worked well and liked it. Cheaper than RedLine, however don't seem to hold up as long. But the way i change my oil; it don't matter....might ditch the RedLine, go back to VR1, it's cheaper. I always used Mobil1 until i changed the cam and springs in my truck...had like 15k miles on the motor and looked like crap for the milage, all gunked up etc. Haven't used it since.

In CT our emissions test is done with a sniffer in the tail pipe. Thats how they did my old Pick Up Truck last year and evey other vehicle I have owned since they started testing here. My 05 GTO and 08 Wrangler Sahara have not been to a test yet, don't think they do a plug in test for any cars

I never really liked Mobile One. I know my 05 GTO came from the factory with Mobile One and I used it for 2 oil changes but once I hit around 1500-2000 miles on it, never used it again.
Tried Amsoil , Lucas , Valvoline, Quaker State but I now have Castrol Edge
5W30 in it. The car only has 14,501 miles on it right now and I purchased it new in January 05.

Wrong. OBD2 cars get a plug on only, unless they pick up on your computer saying things have been turned off, which is aviodable by a good tuner.

I don't know how "Old" your pickup was, but if it was newer then 1997 then it should have been a plug in test only.

Rules changed about 5 years ago, check up on it

Vr1 is great oil that has been around for years! I ran it in my forged 383 lt1 and my dad has ran it for years in his bbc race motors...Speed inc actually recommends this oil for built/stroked lt engines. However I asked them about running it in my ls1 and they said to stick with mobil one, I am assuming because of how "tight" the ls motors are built...

I looked into the racing oil a while back. Valvoline said there were no detergent additives in this oil, and this was one of the reasons for the "race only" on the label. The tech said they recommend VR1 for most higher horsepower street driven cars. I am by no means an expert on oil, but the UOA's on the VR1 came back with no negative comments. If your looking for another oil maybe try the VR1 10-30.

Totally wrong CT does a ready monitor test on OBD2 cars. On obd1 cars its an ASM 25-25 spin test. on 2000 and down 2 monitors can not be ready and still pass. On 01 and newer one monitor can not be set and it gets a pass. I am a state inspector in several states including the communist state of CT. 15-40 diesel does not contain zync any more. And basically its really not a problem with roller CAMS. If desired use EOS from your chevy store. I never use any oil thinner than 15-40. And use sae oils in summer. Never multi vis. I personally never drive my sweet cars in the winter. Thats what beaters are FOR WINTER CARS. If you want oils that have ZYNC visit your nearest honda motorcycle dealer and buy their 10-30 it has loads of ZYNC TOM

You can buy Royal Purple. It has the maximum street and emissions legal amount of zinc phosphorus ( ZDDP ) in it. Its readily available and its not outrageously expensive. IU talked with a rep from Royal Purple and it has more then enough ZDDP for any LSX engine or Roller Cam equipped engine. Also like i said above its strret and emissions legal meaning your cats will be fine.

It's been around for a long time. I run the non-synthetic SAE40 in my car. (I run the SAE50 during the hotter part of track season as recommended by Lunati). Internals stay spotless, no leaks and the car runs great. Oil pressure up the wazoo too. (they make straight SAE weights in the non-synth, but they dont list them on the website for some reason. My local O'Reillys sells it.)

Valvoline is always a good proven choice at any grade.

If your car is a SUMMER driver stick with SAE oils straight weights. Forget the multi vis oils they are a WINTER OIL. Or use 15-40. Like i explained MC oils still have ZYNC if you CHOOSE to want it.
