Default Tapping ls3 for knock sensors

I'm in the process of doing an ls3 swap and have a few quick questions. I know I have to move the knock sensors to the sides and drill and tap holes...but how deep should I go and where should I drill?

Also the ls1 valve covers won't fit, is it best to by ls3 covers or is it safe to gut the ls1's.

Drill the 2 existing 8mm threaded knock sensor bosses out to the tapping size for a 10mm thread. You only drill to the depth of the 10mm thread. They are blind holes.

Drill with 8.5mm bit, then tap with M10 x 1.5 hand tap.

I've looked all over for a drill bit that size with no luck but I did find this one http://m.summitracing.com/parts/wmr-w8619. Would that work?

it should since they are matching them both.
i was going to mention that when i went to get the set for the second time, i went to NAPA and the kit they sold me had a standard drill bit, x/32. i just don't remember the x value.
yeah, if they are offering both as a kit, you should be good to go.

Metric 10mm x 1.5 calls for a 8.5mm drill bit which is 0.335", closest US drill sizes are:

  • 21/64 = 0.328"
  • Q = 0.332"
  • R = 0.339"
  • 11/32 = 0.344"

It might be a nice tap and drill, But I would spend the extra 10-20$ over the cheap $6 summit drill and tap set, and get a real quality drill and tap. I nice drill and tap are almost priceless over using ones that are cheap and suck when you look at what your doing with it, and whats 5-$20 more whats your paying for. Its your time if it the hole dosn't drill nicem and the tap dosn't cut nice and clean, or gets stuck and breaks. Your doing this on a LS3 motor not a headlight bracket for your snow blower.

Just remember start the tap a few turns then bck it out then go in a few more turns use plenty of oil and you will be fine just dont get the tap in a bind and try to force it.
