Default Stay Hydro or go Roller?

I will be building a set of LS3 heads for a curent build. They are currently stock hydrolic lifters. I come from a hidtory of big blocks that all used rollers to get more HP but it seems everyone stays with the Hydrolic here. Am I missing the reason why?

You need to look at what you have.

They are rollers. And they are hydraulic.

You are missing everything.

Hydraulic Roller lifters = Stock

Solid Roller lifters = what you seem to want.

They both have their relative advantages and 'disadvantages'.

Read up on these setups before you make a decision.....

Depends on your goals and application.
Up to 6500 RPM primarily street Hydraulic.
Beyond 7000 RPM Low Lash Solid Roller.
I just completed a 396" LLSR, results in
Dyno Section. I was extremely pleased.
Do a search, speedtigger,DarthV8r, and thunderstruck
All have very detailed threads that will provide
All the information you could want.
Kip @ Cam Motion is who we all worked with.
Great Products and Service.
Good Luck

Depends on budget, goals, and usage of the car.

For most performance applications I would vote low lash solid roller. My car is a street car but not a daily driver. I do race it both autox and drag. It usually gets about 6,000 miles a year put on it. I haven't revved it over 7,000 rpm yet nor do I know if it will be faster if I do. I have zero regrets going LLSR in this application. I like the extra power, how quiet the valvetrain is, and the stability. Plus I've been seeing more and more issues with GM lifters so it eliminates another common fail point.

My truck is my daily. It never sees over 6,000rpm, and usually never over 4,500rpm. No reason I would swap it to solid.

Most people stay hydraulic due to the costs of adjustable rockers, better pushrods, better lifters, need for taller valve covers, etc. My car is an experiment with using stock rockers and shimming them to set lash. Has worked excellent so far but does take some time to set up the first time.

A good solid roller is still the best you can get from a performance stand point. The reason you would choose one for your old school big block are all still the same good reasons to choose a solid roller for your LS project.

Things have evolved over the years for sure. The hydraulic roller lifters have gotten much better and can be a great choice for a street performance engine. With that said, our LLR low lash solid roller camshafts for the LS engine have gotten very popular for good reason.

Our LLR Low Lash Roller Solid Street Camshafts deliver the precision high RPM valve train stability that solid cams are known for with the low maintenance dependability and quiet operation that makes sense in a street driven vehicle.
