I need to Thank You guys very much. I was going FI on our new motor. It would be a big expense to do so, changing all the fuel system, ignition and everything over. After reading all this, as well as many other problematic threads on tuning FI. Not to mention seeing the constant messing with it at the track. I can definitely say without any further deliberating that, I will never go FI. I love my carburetor the more and more I read. You guys are some patient people for sure. God Bless You Guys.
If you and Mick are having this much of a pain in the *** getting the tune right. A greenhorn FI guy like me, would be a goner.
So Thank You Guys again. I guess I will be selling the as cast, not ported at all, LS7 5.5" CID FI intake I have, and get the smaller Carbed version after all. Its the one pictured in this thread I was teasing Darth with. Let me know If any of ya'll might like to buy it. Never been bolted to anything still in the box it came in brand new, with fuel rails.
Best of Luck to you guys on getting this all figured out.

You do get used to tuning with a laptop, and not actually messing with the engine at all, at least tuning wise. But nothing wrong with a carb either especially if you get a good one from the start the way i remember the ootb holley's used to be 20 years ago. Not sure how their carbs are these days, i haven't run one for years.
Back then we even ran that big blue moroso cool can and filled it with ice and the engines would run sweet all day long with cold fuel cruising in summer. You would touch the fuel bowl of the carb after cruising and it was cold. Those old big blocks might not have been any quicker than a good n/a LS is these days and a bit heavier but they were so simple back then and still no slouch. We could throw them together and be driving them in a week, the internet barely existed back then to fill your head with too much complexity.
Now if you are going to go FI and shoot for crazy HP and et's i get the EFI thing a lot more. Don't let the tuning scare you if you feel like you want to go run some crazy 7 second passes. I'd start with a SBE junkyard 5.3 first and blow that up first to learn how to tune FI .

It's not as bad as it sounds. Lol. But i get that you like the old school simplicity. When i was young people would throw ootb 1050 or 1150 2-circuit dominators on simple n/a big blocks and go run 10's or 9's with barely any tuning. We threw an ootb 1150 on a 440ci mopar just to see what happens and were cruising it all over the city the same day, no laptop or wideband not even jet change from memory, and it ran well. Was a little big, but still it ran very well. Went back to the 850 dp and the engine was a little sharper at wot but barely. The 1150 idled and drove around just as good as EFI, without hours of tuning needed. And the engine at the time had a big *** hydraulic cam with 50 degrees overlap. But that 440 just soaked that cam up. You could drive it anywhere.

You nailed that right on the head. Great post. That's the plan. Knocking on that door now. All I have to do now is play with the launch rpm, adjust the timing for the amount of nitrous applied and how fast the nitrous comes in, all according to track conditions. Pretty simple. Getting the chassis to cooperate is a whole different story. Lol After seeing a friend of mine pull his hair out trying to get his car tuned in with FI and a 4L80 trans. He changed everything from a carb and TH400. He took that thing to 7 different tuners all over the place and none could get it to run faster than it did with his old carb. 2 guys came to the track with him and couldn't pull it off. He was constantly bitching about how bad it ran. Needless to say, he has his Carb back on and his TH400 back in and he made his best pass ever. He did keep his Dominator ignition though, being everything needed is in one package. With the MSD 6014 its a little more challenging if you want to run 2 stages. We pull the timing off initial for the first small stage for the hit, due to only 1 stage of retard on this box. We use that for when the 2nd bigger progressed kit comes on immediately after. Keeps it a little fat for the hit to keep the lean spike minimal. We are on 10.5-28's so its a bit of a balancing act. Lol
Thanks for the encouragement. You guys really seem to enjoy dialing in the FI and know it well. I think I'm going to stick with what I would like to think I know at least fairly well. I would have to go do a class on tuning FI somewhere to wrap my head completely around it. I have zero knowledge on it. Maybe some day. I don't want to mess up Darth's thread any more than I have. Sorry Darth. I really enjoy your guys input. Always very helpful. Thank You

Trans is effed. At least I know what it is. Lateral movement on the input shaft is crazy. Spinning the trans by hand is making all kinds of rattling noises. At least I know what it is.
Stinks that this happened, but at least it’s confined, relatively easy to exchange, and affordable. Magnum F-Body would go well with your Sunday sport coat. Jus sayin.
I was trying to look but couldn't find it. I saw you mention that you weren't sure if you need to upgrade your vacuum pump. I just ordered one earlier this week. The guy I spoke to wasn't 100% sure which I actually needed but he recommended going with the larger 33cfm pump. His reasoning was, I could always run less vacuum but wouldn't be able to run more, with the smaller pump, if I needed it. Also, he said if you are able to target the amount of vacuum you want, you should not need to upgrade.

Yes. I have a T56 magnum. It already arrived. But the slave cylinder is on back order until mid april, so yay...
I stuck with the smaller pump, but mainly because I already had it working and my block has the bay to bay breathing windows. If I was converting, I'd buy the bigger pump with a relief valve to make sure it did not draw down past 12 inches vacuum.

I mean this was our big chance to save the world by staying home and working on our cars, and nobody can get parts.... Irony abounds
