To me, a bigger bore and a cam swap doesn't look like a whole new generation.

LT1 to LS1, that is a big change.

Is this just GM marketing garbage or what?

I have a Gen III 3800 in my Boneville. Its still a 3800. Go figure.

Maybe because the LS1 is going out the window and its called the LS2 now.

Obvously theres more changed than the bore, but you are right - not as big as LT1-LS1. The new block design is configured for displacement on demand in upcoming applications. Thats a pretty big change in functionality. It sounds like GEN IV just means that it could support DOD while the GEN III doesnt.

I'm thinking it's more like an evolution of the Gen III, much like the Gen II (LT1) was to the original SBC. LT1 parts are interchangable with the original SBC - just like the LS2 will be interchangable with the LS1.

Yeah but few SBC parts interchange with LT1 parts.

The LS2 is an LS6 with a bigger bore and a cam change.

This is in no way a new generation or engines.

Oh well.

GM marketing garbage it is then

I agree. Its a Gen III engine all the way. Not that that is a bad thing.

from 55-91 it was gen 1 being the orginal 355 which is the base of all 5.7 liter motors. can still be bought through GM performance parts and what not

92-97 it was the gen 2 being LT1

97-05 will be LS1

05+ is Gen 4

as far as why its because the engine takes on a lot more. lighter block, biggger displacement, updated technology. basically it is a gen 1 to gen 2 upgrade but with more modern technology. gen 5.... OHC maybe?!?!

its called gen 4 because the LS7 will be released next year, and that IS a big change (3v heads) They aren't going to release the C6 corvette and say "you can get a z06 with a gen 4 engine or a regular C6 with a gen 3" so both are now gen 4's
