Default cam question?

We are building a l92 headed 427, and i was wondering what cam yall would suggest for this engine. The motor will approximately 10:25.1 comp. ratio and we will be having the exhaust bowls and ports on the heads cleaned up to bring the flow up. Any suggestions would be appreciated, also do yall think that a custom cam would be more beneficial than an off the shelf grind?

what exactly are your goals with the car? who is building your motor?

It's my opinion that ANYONE on here can tell you what cam to go with - on a brand new setup that hasn't been out more than a couple moths but only a FEW have actually tried this and are giving REAL WORLD results

give us more details on your build, and good luck with it also.

I agree with dame. Be careful whom you ask cam advice from. You may kick yourself later. Do lots of research.

Were looking to hopefully run mid 10's at the track on motor, and slap healthy dose of laughing gas on her as well. Allen motorsports out of dallas is building the motor.

Oh yeah, its going into a 98 trans am A4. we would like to have 600 rwhp if possible, our main goal is to eliminate a few pesky full bolt-on cobras that are running around here.

600 RWHP is over 700 at the crank. A 700 h.p. LSX engine isn't a rabbit trick, it takes a ton of cash and knowledge to build that kind of power N/A.

Im very much aware of that, we have already spent quite a bit of cash on this project. Im by no means a rookie when it comes to building engines, even though the lsx is a fairly new beast to me, i have built quite a few stout sbc's and i know they are definately nothing alike they do however work off of the same basics.

That's cool, I'm not beating on you. A buddy of mine just finished a 427 (non- LS7) and it dynoed (engine dyno) at 601 at 6800 RPMs, and he spent 18 G's! That , in my book, is a ton of cash.

Solid roller and more compression will get you 600rwhp (especially if you go with a GMPP intake vs the L76).

18 Gs? I would have hoped he ran 18-degree CNC Brodix heads that flow close to 400cfm with a Brodix HV Carb Intake. With a big solid roller he'd have been closer to 801 on an engine dyno @ 8k RPM, unless money was spent on things that don't make power but that do handle nitrous.

the original plans called for a solid roller, but the lack of availability of adjustable valvetrain coponents for those heads put a hold on that. Yeah i was looking for something more in the 11:1 comp. range but the builder was dead set on the 10.25:1 comp for pump gas. I was also wondering if it would be more beneficial to convert it to a speed density setup, what do you guys think?

Why is the builder so set on 10.25? You are the customer, you tell him what YOU want. Perhaps it's because he already has the 10.25 parts laying around from a previous package, and found a sucker (no offense just using the word to make a point) to use them up on? make sure that if you do go with the 10.25 set up, he times the cam properly to get your DCR where you need it.

let me understand this correctly..... you are looking for 600 rwhp through an A4.... AND your compression is going to be AT MOST 11:1????

Good luck and PLEASE keep us posted.
