LQ9(truck iron 6.0)Max bore size?
#2
I have heard that you can go to .040 over, but .030 is all that is reccomended..... Not sure, but fwiw I have never heard of a Iron Block LQ engine being bored to 4.125... maybe more can chime in on this. But seriously dont think it will accept that big of a bore... otherwise there would be alot more Iron block LQ based 427s running around I would bet.

i'd like to know about this also. i got creative today and the best i could gather my 4.030" lq4/9 still has about .150" left in the walls. the best i could gather on my busted ls2 block the liners are .125" thick.

Seems standard on this forum and among sponsors is 4.03 x 4 making a 408ci. Some blocks with sonic checking can make a 4.06.From what i've read over the years and seen, this is the max bore. And at max I mean later down the road, if there's a problem, you end up with a big paper weight. Up to you if you think that's worth 6ci.

FWIW,
I have a sonic tested 4.060 block built back in 2001 by Nick Agostino when he had ARE. This was the best block he tested out of 5 and @ .060 it was maxed out. The engine only has ~ 15,000 miles since the build in 2001 but I spray it hard once a month weather it needs it or not and its still perfect. I've heard of a few .080 LQ9 engines out there but they are 100% N/A As the added heat and pressure of any power adder would probably collapse the walls.
Good Luck!

Dime a dozen. They are around... heck ya can even find em on ebay.
6.0 liter iron out of a GM 6.0 Truck. LQ9

Not worth going to a 414 by reducing the ability to spray and re-bore the block if a bore gets scratched by a broken ringland or something in the chamber down the road.

5.3 blocks are dime a dozen.
6.0 GEN3 blocks not given away, they arn't in production GM vehicles anymore; so no more backdoor deals.
I've seen a few GEN4 iron blocks around lately, but nobody want the LS2 expenses unless its an LS2 block.
Ebay..... Anyone smart on ebay puts "6.0 LQ9 yada yada, perfect for conversion, high performance", next thing a 6.0 long block goes for $2,500

i built mine with a LQ9 block and i kept it 4.00 bore. i did this for reasons mentioned above. i couldnt save my LS1 block as it burnt a hole in the cylinder wall about .030 deep. so since i knew id be hittin this motor with some nitrous (built for 300) i kept as much wall as possible!!

hey fraser, whats the difference between the GEN3 and 4 blocks. i am starting to hunt for LQ4/9's around here and really don't know a whole lot about them. well other then they are LS in architecture and the accept L92 heads. i am looking to replace my LT1 in my 97 t/a. and want to tinker around with this motor. sorry for the hijack.

cam sensor relocated to timing cover, thus requiring an LS2 timing set
knock sensors relocated
"LS2" valley cover
"LS2" lifter buckets
different cam bearings
different head bolts/studs

Hey Fraser, Im about to do a conversion to a iron 6.0(408)/317s w 244/248-612/615 on a 114 into my 98 z28. You guys tuned my car when the previous owner put a couple of mods worth about 384.8whp on it, ls6 intake, ms3-113, 25% underdrive, also has jethots, 3"true duals with a yank ss4000 and 2.73s. going 3500 on the stall and because of money probally going to use the ls6 intake with the same tune, but I seen a ls2 intake here for a reasonable price, should I get it? will it work with the same tune better? Can I just drop this engine in? O yea 2.73s are coming out for 3.42s thanks for your time
