Default Any reason NOT to stroke my LS2 to a 408?

What say you? Any reason not to stick this kit:

http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=383&gid=187

in my current LS2.. I just want to pick up some more bottom end torque.

Thoughts?

Besides money being chepaer for Callies and Wiseco are you sure you can bore a ls2 to 4.030? I can put a kit together for you for less money than that.

I have the parts.. I'm not shopping.

I was hoping for a technical reason NOT to go with a 408 build on an LS2 block. I've heard of issues with piston rock at BDC due to the stroke, but I also heard this isn't an issue with the Weisco pistons in the kit.

From what I've read most LS2 owner's go to 402 instead of 408. I think the concern is getting the cylinder walls to thin being aluminum and all. Not sure at what point you'd re-sleeve the block either? Seems to be that all stroker LS2's go to a max of 4.005" bore?

It all depends on how Lunati speced those pistons. You could ask Brian Nutter and he could probably let you know. The normal Wisecos work great in that app but I don't know exactly what the Lunati version is?

I thought all Lunati engine kits were 0.005 over; it would be 4.035.

Oh I didn't see it was 4.030 bore. I would do the 4.005 pistons.

The pistons in the kit are Weiscos... I could get the exact spec.

So the issue is boring an LS2 to 4.030... right?

Funny that they would send me the kit knowing it's for an LS2 if there's an issue. I will call them up tomorrow to confirm. I would be just as happy with a 402. What's 6 cubes worth? lol

What's funny is that I don't even see a 402 listed on thier website...

I'm checking with Lunati right now on the 4.005 pistons. I guess you CAN go 4.030 but it taking the sleeves to thier max.

I really don't want to sleeve the block for an additional 6 cubes.

I have a good friend that has a 408 ls2 and is pushing 18 lbs of boost into it making right at 900 rwhp.

Not saying I would do it, just saying

with a bored out stock sleeve? I get mixed responses from shops when I ask about it.

I would rather be safer and have 6 less cubes.

Yes, on a bored out stock sleeve.

I agree with you though. Good luck!

I have seen a LS2 bored to 4.030 with stock sleeves and was fine down low. When opened up in just one dyno pass it hit 250 degrees very quick. And yes Lunati can give you a 4.000" piston, I have asked and recieved this for my old 6.0L application with Lunati rods and Pistons.

What he wants is a 4.005 piston to make a 403. Cleaning up the bore .005 is a good idea. But he said he already had the parts so I guess he trade them in, good deal.

Lunati is sending me over some 4.005 Wiesco pistons for the swap. They thought I had an iron 6L block.

So, we're back in business.. Now I just need to get it out, built and back in by the race in November. eek! (and build a new trans.. and redo my shocks, and...)

Here's a fun video of the car now.. I wonder if it will sound different.

I don't know if this will help, but Mahle makes a 4.005 piston kit for LS2's. I've got them in my 403. I know they work great for NA. I haven't heard anything regarding reliability for NOS or FI.
