Default Chevy Engineer drops details on LT4

GM has been uncharacteristically vague about the power numbers for the LT4 in the new Z06. At the debut, they took care to note that it would make 625+ horsepower and 630+ ft-lbs of torque. Why not a flat number?

Apparently, the LT4 is anticipated to make a fair bit more than that. "We fully expect to beat the number, but we came up with a safe estimate for the show." That comes from Jordan Lee, the program manager for GM's small block program. According to him, the engine should make more torque as well.

The key difference between this system and the one used in the ZR1, is efficiency. Eaton used a smaller 1.7-liter sueprcharger the Z06. It's lighter, shorter, spins about 5,000 rpm faster at full tilt. As result, the airflow is the same. A faster, smaller supercharger would normally mean higher intake air temps, but they've also revised the intercooler to be 10% more effective and 23% smaller than the one in the ZR1. That's progress.

Lee went on to say the LT1 will be pushing about 9.5 psi of boost with a compression of 10:1. That's pretty high for a boosted motor. I doubt they would've been able to get that kind combo without the fuel cooling properties of direct injection. Either way, the bottom-end is built up to handle it. While it doesn't have titanium connecting rods like the LS9, there are forged pistons and a forged crank. “Also, we annodized the lands on the piston and went with a PVD-coated ring. Finally, the piston pin has DLC coating to handle the extra temperature and pressure.” said Lee.

In the end, the LT1 should weigh about as much as the LS9 at around 529 pounds.

More details about the LT4 and the Z06 are here.

Boy that would be cool, but it would probably cost $30k for one.

Almost looks small to enough to fit under my stock '98 SS hood

What a transplant that would be...very expensive as well.

I'm assuming this is a completely different block from the LS series. Is that right?

Pretty much everything is different aside from a handful of parts.

So the block is different, the heads, the internals all different?

while the block is a new block and such. it is amazingly similar to the LS series. the block itself really does seem to look more and more like a nice evolutionary step while the heads are the revolutionary step.

i am concerned about the faster spinning smaller blower and smaller intercooler.. it just doesnt seem like that will be good for track days.

From the factory I think the cooling will be just fine. If you try to turn the small blower up you will run into issues. It's too bad there won't be a way to get that blower onto my motor. I think it would actually fit under the hood.

I wonder if this will drive the prices of the new C7 down a bit? As a few people rush in to get them. Probably not by much if any, but I can hope.
