? about Aussie V-8 supercars Here in the States they're just now showing this years races. I have a question about the type of engines used. The other night they showed a commodore with the engine exposed and it looked like an EFI gen II engine,that is an Iron block with siamesed 3,5 and 4,6 exhaust headers. Do they not use LS1 blocks? Also, what displacement fuel delivery etc? By the way "Aussie V-8 Supercars" is what our NASCAR should be. Thanks Jimmy

I THINK it's a 5.0L Holden designed engine, not related to anything we have here.

Buford and Speartech,
Commodore Engines being phased out are as you describe - siamesed heads SBC of 5 litre.
New heads are equi-distant porting for exhaust.
Engines are based/derived from Chevrolet GenII SBC "Aurora"

The engines used in the V8 Supercars are 5 litre Ford and 5 litre Chevy's.
The Fords use an SVO Block, Aluminium heads.
The chevys currently run two types of motors, (being phased out is) the 18 degree chevy with the siamesed ports and a new "aroura" engine with very similar head and block to the Ford.
Both brands make about 620 hp and 450ftlb of torque.
they have 8 Throttle body fuel injection (slide plate was ruled out a few years ago).
They all run Motec computers and are rev limited to 7500 rpm, run solid roller cam and dry sump.

It sounds like Holden is using either CR5 heads with a destroked LSI block or NASCAR style SB2.2 heads with an aluminum Bowtie block.Either one would make for an economical to build race motor.The Motec fuel systems and 7500rpm redlines would keep the power output very similar between Fords and Holdens.I've watched some of the races on Speed TV,it looked like the Ford guys had a slight edge in power this year,maybe a year of engine development will help Holden back on top.

Is the block a LS1 cast iron truck style,a bowtie cast iron or a Holden design?In the late 60s the TransAm series pitted Mustangs against Camaros thus the origin of the Z28 Camaro and Boss 302 Mustang,that was a neat racing series with big factory involvement.The V8 Supercar series sounds like a modern day version of our old TransAm series.Sounds a lot more interesting than the present day TransAm over here.

The engine specs are really not very detailed.Do the teams buy their engines from Holden allready built or what?Are the engines sealed or can the teams do engine development?

The blocks are Chevy "bow tie" and Ford "SVO motorsport"
Each team either has thier own in house engine builder/developement or they contract it out to an engine builder or they might lease a motor.

According to John Hart's website they do the machine work for HRT they use a Chevrolet based"Nascar derivative,a dedicated 5-liter engine that in no way resembles a road car engine".Sounds alot like a cast iron bowtie block with SB2.2 Nascar Busch series heads modified to accept fuel injection.That combo even destroked to 5-liters running Motec fuel injection would be really strong.They probably impose the 7500rpm rev limit to keep them from making 750hp+.

Thanks for all the replies, Speedchannel showed the 24 hrs of Bathhurst this weekend, Australian motorsports RULE! By the way Jason of Texas Speed and Performance just got one of the 1st GTO's in the US for product development. He had to get an A4, couldn't find an M6 quik enough to get a jump on the market. Dynoed 293 RWHP and 308 RWTQ. It has 4 cats and 2 mufflers. Thanks again, Jimmy
