Default noob from MN with v8 RX-7

Hey, my name is Scott, I'm new to this whole v8 thing. I come from little turbocharged 4 cylinders. The last car I put alot of work into was my 98 turbo Saturn SC2, and after I popped the forged build on 18psi it was time for something new.

I came across a 88 Mazda RX-7 with a LT1/T56 swap and jumped on it knowing there were a few problems. Got about 1000 hard and fun miles from it and lost the oil pressure and gained some knock.

The last SBC I build was over 7 years and that was for a Caprice so it was nothing too special. I know I have alot to learn and I'm trying to figure out the route I want to go when I do the rebuild. 383 sounds like a very probable plan.

Nice swap. Did you use a kit (grannyspeedshop, etc) or fab it yourself?

I have a first gen RX7 with a Grannys deluxe kit (350/700R4).

Yeah, I remember you, I might like yours a little more than I like mine. One thing for sure is I have to find some different springs or go with coilovers, this thing handles horrible. There's no way I could do what you did in your video, its too unpredictable and bouncy and I hate it.

No I haven't got around to pulling it yet. I've been working on it slow but without heat in the garage I just don't have much motivation. I'm half tempted to just throw a set of bearings and a new oil pump at it to drive it in spring and do a full build when I have more money(trying to get into a house right now).

In my case I'm working on cleaning the wires from the harness in the car and the engine bay itself.
Car was fully fonctional when I bought it and very reliable so far.
I drove the car back to Montreal comming from Long Island New York with "0" issue what so ever , I'm in love with that car.

Here's how she looks as of right now :

It is my winter project so I'm working on it slowly during the cold and long Montreal winter...

Holy crap, you're one of those perfectionist types, aren't you? Not that its a bad thing, but I don't mind people knowing I drive mine, and I drive it alot when I do. This car does have some rust bubbles behind both rear wheels and the front bumper was spray painted but it doesn't bother me.

I guess I'm just too hesitant to dig into it too hard right now and its still drivable with minimal work and I wanna use it again when the snow is gone. With my luck all projects take twice as long as I plan on too haha.

Good way to learn for me.

I would have never been able to built one myself but since it was already done all I have to do is fine tuning it.
It should look like it came like that from the factory when I'm done ( hopefully ) .
I want all the factory gauges to work ( only RPM is working right now ) .

All my gauges work, except for the boost one of course. Speedo is spot on.

I came to notice with this car that the builder didn't so much care about looks as he did about functionality and it shows in all the right places. Only reason I spun bearings is this engine probably had a hard life and has more miles on it than the car does, odometer is reading just over 106000 miles.

Interesting fact too, this car originally came from Canada, had a KMs cluster in it that was swapped at some point. Aparently its got a couple small features that only the Canadian cars were equipped with.

Jump over to the mngmp.org club, a lot of nice guys with all kinds of cars. A little drama going on right now but once things get sorted out everyone is really great.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Here's my old Saturn that I mentioned in the first post.

This is exactly what I'm trying to figure out right now.
I just received a Cable-X from Abbott for the speedo ( maybe what you already have ) but it isn't hooked up yet and I have no idea how to make the stock Temp & Oil pressure gauge to work. The search button is my friend right now ( more on the V8RX7forum ) for the 2 gauges.

I just bought complete seat belt set up from a Canadian car & a KMH Cluster "non Turbo" so I'll get rid of the Boost gauge and get the Voltmeter gauge instead.

Here's the extra wires I have removed so far.
